Fired her up to bring her in the garage and will only idle and run on all 3 with the choke on, choke off and it drops to 2 cylinders and backfiring and will not idle. Idles allright with the choke half on. How about a little direction before I tear into this thing. Maybe dirty carbs? does have half tank of last years fuel but I filled it with fresh and added some Sea Foam.
 
i had the same style problems when i first started this season. crank the back end of the sled up and let er rip. my 3rd cylinder came back after a few WOT bursts. but ya, daman is right. take the carbs off and clean if need be. let us know if thats all it was
 
Got it on the stand now will let you know how it goes. Looks like center cyl not firing. Carbs have never been off almost 6500 miles so prolly overdue for this.Thanx for the replies.
 
clean the carbs before you have a burn down........... I take my carbs off at the end of every season and put it away clean and dry......
 
I cant stress it enough, clean the carbs. I didnt believe it when I started reading everyone preaching about cleaning the carbs. Just pulled mine off two days ago. Some junk in one of the bowls and pto side pilot was almost plugged! Get em clean and adjusted properly, then run that old fuel out and you should be good to go!

My sleds never run after sitting all summer. The carbs always need to be cleaned. I may do what Tod does...remove and clean when it's warm out.....But then there's the boat. Damn, too many toys or I'm too lazy. Probably the latter.
 
OK got her barking on all 3 and seems to want to idle allright but has a bad bog off idle, thinkin maybe I dont have the pilot screws adjusted right (too damn many helpers last night) should I bottom these out then back them off and how many turns? I counted the turns OUT when I removed them and thought I had them back where they should be but.... help me out here guys! Yeah I know this shoulda been done before now but I guess I got a little lazy and she has always ran sooooo good :o|
 
i need to clean my carbs on my MM 700 too. 25,000 km and they were never touched yet. has a hard time idling in the freezing mornings but perfect all other times.
 
stock fuel screws are 1 7/8 turns out from lightly seated ( screwed in). Ive herd most guys around here run at least 2 turns out to get rid of the off idle bog. I did have this on my 04 and turning them out to 2 1/4 took care of it. I would guess that your bog is still due to dirty piolt jets. I had to clean mine twice the first time to get it done right also. Make sure you can see light through the jets and blow out all the passages if you can. Its like old plumming, once you touch it the crud comes from everywhere. Good luck and keep at it. Chris.
 
Gonna pull em again tomorrow after work. Lightly seated and 2 turns out on the pilot screws. Carbs actually looked real clean just some slight white residue in two of the bowls, I'm thinkin this is what made its way into one of the jets I'll go thru all of them again....thanks alot guys. I think I made some progress.

From your last post, it sounded like you were focused on the air-fuel screw adjustment. I would bet your pilot jets are still the cuplrit.
 
Ditto, many first timers miss getting the pilots clean. It's hard to do, but look through them and you should be able to see a very small, ROUND, hole. I've never gotten them clean by just blowing air and/or cleaner through them. Have to cut a piece of wire off a wire brush and run that into them to get crud out. Many people think to use a welding torch cleaner, be careful with one of those, very easy to ream the jet out to a bigger size. Also heard of people using a bread tie.
 
Pilots

Seems when Pilots get old, cleaning somtimes doesn't work completely...I did it twice last year and completely clogged this year.... Pilots are only about 3.50 ea... So I just replaced mine and cut out the middle man. Also added a fuel shut off valve so in the spring I can run all the fuel out of the carbs...
 
I've never had a problem using an air compressor with a small tipped nozzle. I spray carb cleaner into the jet, then hit it with air. It may take a couple of shots of air, but it removes all the crud. The cleaning liquid may help with back pressure.
 
Well after another teardown and cleaning and double check of the pilot screw setting, LIGHTLY SEATED AND 2 TURNS OUT (they were real close) I think I have it right. She seems crispier on the stand, unfortunately we have no snow for a test ride, but yeah I think I got it. Had to adjust in some slack in the throttle cable to get her to idle down but all good there now. Book says 1800 rpm +- 100rpm for idle speed, seems a little high to me whaddya think? Thanks for your replies guys.
