On a 98 600 XTC , are the jackshaft and axle bearings in the chaincase the same ? Also, are these both sealed and need to be repacked ? Thanks

yes they are the same bearing... some say seals on both sides, some say seals on tunnel side only, some say seals on lubricant /chain case side only...
I do believe 98 and later models, Yamaha was leaving one seal on and removing one...
leave the seal exposed to case lubricant installed as this will keep the bearing clean of metal shavings/particulates yet still allow the bearing to pull lubricant to the other side for lubrication...
if you have the case off and bearings removed, why not just buy and install two new ones?.. they cost about $6 each from a bearing supplier...

If you leave the seal in on the chain case side ho does the lube get through the seal to the bearing. This is something I really haven't paid attention until now. Broke a drive shaft, it took out bearings and chaincase. Put it back together but haven't put the oil in yet. I left all seals out and now I'm wondering which is right.....Soc

Yamaha was doing it like this... those two bearings normally have good life with clean chain case oil and regular chain case maint...
many may disagree, but we duplicated Yamaha's decisions with non eventful results... tj

When I looked in Yamaha microfiche the price came up around 40 bucks each. The ones I have are good I just don't have the seals for the top bearing. Are they really that much cheaper at a bearing dealer?

yes they they are that much cheaper.... probably not the same quality that Yamaha sells, but, we go through these bearings yearly making it matter little... tj

New bearings
You were right TJ500. They were 7.50 each. Beats the price Yamaha wants for theirs. Thanks,Soc

Bearings are some of the most highly controlled manufactured tolerance items in the world. To say the bearings you get from the bearing house are not as good as the Yamaha packaged bearings would highly erroneous IMO. Chances are the bearings yamaha spec are just as good as the SKF, SNR, NTN, KOYO, yada, yada. By the way, what are the bearing numbers for the chaincase?

China can't make a single item that's really worth owning for a any length of time, merely because their products are inferior to USA, Canada, Japan and European manufacturing.... Bearings from China are no exception.... But like I said, if you go through them yearly and replace noisy bearings, you can get by with them... Yes a 1 inch shaft needs exactly a 1 inch bearing... That says nothing of the metalurgy in preparation of said bearings...
The bearing supply store in our community sells Asian bearings, and I don't mean from Japan nor do I mean SKF, SNR, NTN, KOYO, yada, yada as these are all good bearings... tj

OK, I'll concede bearings made in China and maybe some eastern block European countries are inferior. But if the "Bearing House" in your town only sells this junk they shouldn't be in business; and bearing house shouldn't be the local fleet supply or auto parts store. They will just put crap on the shelf to get customers in the door. A reputable bearing dealer will not sell this crap. By the way, I'm in the business of using vibration to detect bearing fault and other deficiencies in industrial equipment so I see all kinds of bearings.
