Got a nice barn find of a 95 Vmax 600 ST, really good price and in overall terrific shape. Went through the carbs, cleaned the tank, new lines...started right up and runs excellent. Primary clutch needs to be rebuilt, loose rollers.
Anyways, it's obviously getting too much oil as it's fouling plugs and even seeping out the exhaust manifold gaskets. I'll replace those shortly. What's the adjustment procedure on the cable for oil pump?

Do a search on oil adjustment, many posts about it.
Check you jetting, make sure the carbs are CLEAN, check pilot jets also, you should be able to see thru them.

Got it thanks! Running much better now, still need to rebuild the clutch. One thing that is still going on though is the idle sometimes doesn't "settle down" like it should. Meaning you're out riding and off the throttle is stays up to 2500-3000 until you blip it enough.
I noticed when cleaning the carbs the one side had some slight scoring marks on it, could that be causing a hangup? Cables are all nice and free, double and triple checked those. When I cleaned the carbs I just removed the bowls, jets and cleaned it that route. How nasty is it to remove the slides completely? I've always worked on roundslides, never the flats so it's unknown turf to me. Figure if that's the problem I'll have to take the slides out and polish out the marks.

Take the top of the carbs off and check to see if the screw on top is tight. Seems like a common occurance

The hanging idle (meaning after a hard run, the idle won't settle) is a slight lean condition. You can turn your pilot screw out .25 turn and see if that helps. Usually people blip the choke for a split second and the idle drops down instantly. Let me know if that helps.

Was your oil cable / lever out of adjustment?
My 97 venture 600 with nearly the same motor did the same thing until I put a new oil pump on it. Mine failed rich, as most in my year and a couple other models and years had defective oil pumps that failed, out of warranty of course. The part for mine was superseded with a different part number, and those apparently had no issues.

so the pilot screw should be out from lightly seated? I put my jets back in at lightly seated and fuel screw out 2 turns. Should I back the main and pilot out a bit? Thanks Jasondaman said:.....

Oh sorry, I didn't mean from lightly seated, I meant 1/4 turn MORE than whatever you had the at.. so try 2.25

no everything seems to run fine on mine but I noticed about a 30% decrease in fuel mileage from last year. Also how many turns out should my jets be for factory settings

what jets you talking? the mains, pilots? they just turn till snug,i dont understaind.
Well the oil cable was slightly out of adjustment, slightly better. It's not doing what I call the "cropduster" smoking, but a little more than I'm used to. I'd rather see it then not!
Took the top of the carbs off and one of the screws was VERY loose, a good 3 turns to get it back in. That pretty much took the idle problem away. Thanks!
Still not sure if I'm going to keep it or sell it. I really like it other than the weight!

The only screws that are in the top are the 2 small allan screws and the large phillips head the screws into the rotaoting rod that lifts the needle body... confused how that would have helped the idle.. hmmm

The large phillips screw for the slide was loose to the point of allowing a lot of play on the shaft. I worked the throttle and the slide would hang up slightly before it closed. Tightened it up and it stopped. Maybe there was a little rough spot on the slide and without that extra force it wouldn't close.
