No, I am not trying to save a few bucks but with the gas in Silver City and White Pine being gone I will certainly be buying fuel at Konteka and from what I understand they only have 87. Should I be carrying a jug of octane booster? I have heard varying opinions on the effectiveness of the products. Am I going to be pinging and banging if I have to fill up with 87? Suggestions?

most octane booster raise octane in points, example 7 points would = 87.7 only ( my understanding) in a 87 octane base fuel , pretty much need 91 octane in all srx im lucky i have 94 avalible here i add octane boost to that as well , my other sled rmk 800 has switch which lets you choice from reg or premium too bad yamahas dint have same

LET ME FINISH YOUR TITLE. '' 87 OCTANE IN AN 01 SRX = BIG TROUBLE ''. YOUR GONNA BE BANGING MORE THAN PINGING. ONLY WAY YOU MIGHT GET THIS TO WORK IS JET WAY WAY WAY UP. 3:16 (yammie tony)

We all have to deal with this dilemma at one time or another nowadays + this is exactly why I am keeping the DCS functioning on my 2002 SRX.

IMO:
Running a stock SRX on 87 octane is right across the line into "NO MAN'S LAND". Any of the charts / books I have, show approx 11.5:1 full stroke compression ratio as the limit for KNOWN 87 octane.[and thats not catering to "E" fuels] and the 2001 SRXs are all of 11.5:1 full stroke compression ratio.
If the sled is conservatively rich and not run wide open for any length of time you may be OK but you won't really know for sure, nor will anyone else...all the safety factor will be gone!.

There have been some good posts on the forum, on octane boosters, that you may want to do a search on.

We may all be looking at sending our heads off to MrViper, or one of the other engine gurus with the expertise to machine our heads, so we can run the lower octane fuels and not loose too much performance.

This is really going to open up a can of worms. All I will tell you is that we have run 87 in our SRX many times in the past without issues. This was for many long pull runs. I am not recommending it but we used to do it all the time. We also ran it with BR9ES plugs. Maybe we were just lucky...

I RAN SUNOCO 94 ULTRA IN MY 2002 SRX. DCS BLINKED RIGHT AT THE END OF ABOUT A 1 MILE LAKE RUN. I FIGURE , WHAT THE HELL, I AM GONNA TRY AFEW THINGS. TOOK 110 SUNOCO PURPLE AND MIXED IT WITH 89. NO DCS ANYWHERE!! FOUND 100 OCTANE CALLED GT MADE BY SUNOCO. RAN THAT NO DCS ANYWHERE. MY 2002 IS STOCK, MOTOR NEVER BEEN TOUCHED. I WOULD NOT RUN 87 , SORRY!! 3:16 (yammie tony)

I sure wish we could get that fuel in my part of the world...I am constantly mixing 100LL with premium pump fuel to keep my DCS happy!

THERE WAS A NIGHT MARE STORIE ON HERE AWHILE BACK ABOUT A GUY THAT BROUGHT A XP 800 DOO TO DYNOTECH. AFTER HE STOPED AND BOUGHT 94 CITGO PREM FUEL FOR TESTING. FIRST PULL , THIS XP WENT INTO RETARD TIMING MODE. LONG STORIE SHORT, THIS FUEL WAS TESTED TO BE 76 OCTANE. NOT GOOD. ALSO KEEP IN MIND LAST SEASON ALL THE PISTON FAILURE POSTS THAT WERE HERE. FUEL TODAY IS ABOUT GREEN CLEAN AIR, NOT KEEPING YOUR SNOWMOBILE FAST . 3:16 (yammie tony)

i also do the 100LL 91 mix (91 ia all we have my way) after reading about torco accelerator in another post i've been doing some reading on it. seems like pretty good stuff as far as octane boosters go, i'm gonna keep some of that with me for those long trips where carrying around 100LL isn't an option

If 87 is the fuel of choice , would pulling your needles up and bumping your pilots up one size help ,as most of your riding will be in the needle cicuit , more fuel less aluminum , ?

SHURE VINCE ALL THAT WOULD HELP, INCRESEING MAIN JET SIZE ALSO !!! BUT THAN YOU KNOW NEXT QUESTION, TAKE IT TO THE BANK. '' WHY IS MY SRX SLOW ''. 3:16 (yammie tony)

There is no Octane boost made that will help 87 to run in a SRX,not going to happen,i would WALK.... before id run 87 in mine.

I'm with staggs65 - get some Torco Accelorator - it is pure toulene, benzine, and ether - exactly what GOOD unleaded race fuel has alot of - 16oz in 10 gallons of 87 will give you 91 octane - along with Amsoil (which has the same ingrediants) it is the only octane boost I would use when I can't get good fuel!!!

I have heard of many fuel stations in MI not selling Premium this winter. I try to use 91 or 93 as much as possible in ours. I can see a problem with using premium though, not as many people use premium as 87 so the gas sets longer in the tanks at the station. This allows for more contamination and water to enter the fuel. Plus the fuel will not last as long in the snowmobile due to setting in the station tank longer. No one really knows how long the fuel has been at the station before you buy it do you? It would be nice if it had a born date on the fuel, but that won't happen any time soon, heck they don't even have to post that it has ethonal in it anymore. Al

i'm laughing my ??? off here, I've owned my srx for 3 years now i ride on average 200 miles a week with it and i don't treat it nice at all lol, i'll be glad to tell you i run only 87 octane in it and sometimes i've put in 50:1 mixed gas in it and i've never had a problem other than a few back fires lol other than that it flys and runs strong all day and also with br9es plugs probably wouldn't recommend it but just what i do cause i want to see how much chit this sled can take and let me tell you every yammie i've owned has been awsome to say the least
