Hi,
I have been lurking here for about a week and you guys sure know how to make me want to take a second out and buy a 2010 Yamaha...BUT since I wish to remain married (for a little while longer anyway) I have been interested in buying a 93 Exciter II SX, I will attach a link to the pics so you guys can give me an honest opinion.
The sled has 3K and only has a small dent on the right side shock/strut cover. Im just getting back into sledding, previously I ran to death a '78 exciter 440 so Iam used to NO real suspension. I was hoping to jump into a 2002 Viper but just cant find any under 2K.
So I am seeking some opinions on the value of this sled and any comments are appreciated.

GREAT SLED. MINE IS SITTING IN MY FRONT YARD AS I TYPE. THIS IS THE BEST EXCITER. YAMAHA ONLY MADE THIS SLED IN 1993. VERY FAST, VERY LITE, AND STILL HAS A GREAT RIDE. MOTOR HAD ALOT MORE HP THAN STANDARD EXCITER. DON,T EVEN WAIT, GO GET IT. 3:16 (yammie tony)
thanks Yammiegod.
Do you think its worth 1000.00 dollars?? Or is 800.00 about right.
Were you able to see the pics in the link??

I know I will get whipped for saying this, but I would pass, unless you can buy for under 750 and are willing to work on and buy alot of parts. Yes the 93 SX was rare and only built one year, but is that what you really want? I would look at a V Max SX, you can pick up for a little more and have a much better riding sled. Any machine you buy at this age will need some work, ie; brgs, hyfax's wear bars, ect. Al
thanks Al I do appreciate you thoughts, I do like how the sled looks. I have not fired it up yet and have not seen it in person.

why does the year matter on how much its worn out? its got 3,000 miles he said. as long as its been taken care you should be ok. everyone i know with an exciter has never had any trouble. Personally i have a phazer with 6,500 miles and its practically bullet proof. it all depends on the previous owner

I had a 93 EXII SX before I bought my srx.
I put on over 6500 miles on it without a problem. Not easy miles either, rode hard and put away wet hard! Pinned to the bar all the time trying to keep up with my buds on 700 and 800's. On the trails, it was great. Only things I ever changed was slides, belts and a few wheel bearings great sled! I wish I could find one around here, i'd scoop it up.
If you can get it for 7-800 bucks, I'd say go for it.
You will know if it was beat or not as soon as you see it in person.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Rick.

THESE GUYS ARE ALL CORRECT, AND YES ITS A OLD SLED, BUT I GUESS IT COMES DOWN TO WHAT YA WANT. 3000 MILES IS LOW, MINE HAS 4200 ON IT, I JUST BUILT A CLUTCH KIT FOR IT AND FOUND A BENDER RACING SINGLE PIPE. I HAVE TO TELL YA THIS SLED HAULS THE MAIL. 700-800 IS A GREAT BUY, JUST LOOK IT OVER GOOD. 3:16 (yammie tony)
thanks for the input guys..you are right is the thought that it really comes down to what "I want to spend".
I only really have 1000.00 to play with so I guess iam looking for the most FUN--bang for the buck, and this sled has definitely delivered that in the past/current owners.
I was really stumped on a price offering for the seller. He was asking for over 1300.00 and this just didn't seem right, just little out of whack.
I was able to get him down to 1100.00 so far. But again seems like a little over priced.
You guys here are the resource I needed to tap into for the REAL facts of ownership. I definitely appreciate all of your posts. Those of you that OWN the machine can most give me the information I am looking for in making this very PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL decision.
Thanks again to all those who have replied.

I have two of them.one with 4500 miles and one with 6500 miles, they are in perfect condition! I wouldnt sell mine for less than $1000 a piece, I would recommend cleaning the carbs right away..I just did mine and found alot of crud. They are fun sleds to ride.
Thanks Barney
I think I'm gonnna try and negiotate with the seller alittle
i mean I don't want to loose a pretty good looking sled
for 100 bucks.

bsbuggs,
A friend of mine is currently putting his back together after his brother rode it for years and burnt a cylinder last year. His brother use to go to radar runs and drags and spank the new 600's with it all day. Sweet looking sled. Special motor. Special struts. Last of the Exciters.
As for the value this just happened last week in Denmark, Wisconsin. A guy got out his SX after sitting for several years. Rode it around for awhile and the engine seized. He pulled the head off and figured it was a loss. So the guy put it on Craigslist on saturday morning for $200 dollars and with in a hour had several calls. Pretty soon that day he had three guys at his house with trailers in toe. The sled was in mint condition other than the motor issue. One guy said he would give $500, Then the others starting bidding. They bidded up to $700 before the rest quite. The seller said he couldn't believe he list the sled for $200 and ended up with $700.
So you think $1100 is a bad price for the sled your looking at. I'll bet you could part it out and get all of that for it.

That is exactly why I posted my question here, I was definitely looking for this type of perspective. I do have to agree with what the others have said there is a fine balance between getting a GREAT sled in its day to OVERPAYING.
By coming here I knew I could get some idea of what was a fair price and soo far Im not to far off.
This is where I was struggling on whether to pick up something like a 95 vmax for just a little more money or grab up a fairly LOW mileage 93 SX.
I really appreciate all of your help with my shopping/decision.

Buggs,
I agree with all ofthe comments posted here about the Exciter SX being a special sled. There is one for sale here in the Albany NY area with about the same mileage and the owner is asking $1700 for it. I took a look at the pictures. There is a lot of rust on the rear suspension. You can count on having to replace every bearing in the rear suspension. The rear suspesion should be removed, disassembled and rebuilt, probably will need new plastic bushing (fairly cheap). You'll want to replace the jackshaft bearing and the drive axle bearing. Total cost of the bearings will be about $150. The Exciter SX is a triific sled BUT given what I see in the pictures I would negotiate to a price of $700 - $800 maximum. This sled needs a good going over and complete servicing.
