I totally agree about the suspension needs to be gone over. Can anyone point me in the right direction on a service manual or something to guide me.
I am pretty mechanical but have never worked on sleds suspension.

Check on the site here for one or ebay, yes a manual will help you the suspension should be removed and totally gone through chrcked over.
Just wanted to give an update, I cannot get the guy any lower than 1000.00, AND I have to travel 3 hrs to get it. I am really struggling with this now.
I mean for a few hundred more(4 or 5) I could pick up a 97 or 98 vmax with a real suspension and MORE power. I am thinking this is the way to go.??
I have always liked vehicles that were limited production, but I keep thinking this guy is about 250.00 high and now I have a 6 hour(roound) trip...man

if this was for my main sled i'd walk and fine a '98 vm...
i too have a sx and love it! but if the internals have been as neglected as bad as the externals of this sled you are in for a long depressing season. i would say no to this sled. strut tube bashed in,cracked hood, seat coming apart (due to the wood underneath being rotted)rear suspension looks as if it never has been removed(way too much rust)$700.00 would be pushing it.nice sx,s run for between 1000.00 -1500.00. anyone getting one for cheaper(in great shape) got a great deal on a 1 year only limited edition machine that will be worth more in the years to come
You guys are very helpful. I'm doing my best to keep my head
and not get into the"have to have" mode.
And this sled will be my primary ride. The more I weigt the price
the more I'm think I'm gonna pass.
With that said any suggestions about which year vmax
was a good year? There a quite a few on craigsliat
and not get into the"have to have" mode.

I will definatly look at the vmax triple. Just by the sleds in your
stable let's me know that you understand where I'm coming from.

I love the Exciter SX and i also own one. If you are looking for a sled to ride, you can find something much better. The Exciter SX is a vintage sled for collectors. If you are looking for smething to ride, spend a few hundred more dollars and get a sled much better for riding. $1200-1500 will buy you a fair 98 SRX, a good 92-93 V-max4, a good 97 V-max 700SX, or any of the SXR 500-600 sleds. You will be WAY happier riding one of these sleds down a trail. Jeff Wurl
Thanks jeff
that's exactly where I will do most of my riding-- trail.
Not too much lake speed stuff.

Here's something to consider: I bought a used 97 SX 700 for a "steal" at $1300 in Grand Rapids, MI this fall. It appeared to be in great shape. Almost all new bearings were needed in the suspension, the coolant pump leaked and it had no cover.
My warning is this: Spend less than your max amount because there will be "surprise costs" that will come with any used sled. I do love the SX, but with the final cost in, it wasn't such a great deal...
I recommend you stay away from the 94-96 V-max 5-600 sleds. Very little / poor rear suspension (except for the 96 V-max XT's.)
Good luck and have fun!

DUDE, IN THE PERFECT WORLD YOU CAN GRAB THIS AND THROW IT IN THE CORNER OF YOUR GARAGE AND TAKE YOUR TIME MAKING IT THE WAY YOU WANT. FOR WHAT YOU POSTED, YOU PROBLEY BE BETTER LOOKING FOR A 97-98-99 VMAX 5X. ALSO A GREAT SLED. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Tony,
I agree I wish I had the extra cash to buy and hold.
I have been searching for a good vamax now as you guys have
suggested.
Like I said in the fist post my last ride was a 78 440 exciter
so a 98 srx or vamx will probably blow my mind !
Thanks again you guys!
