SXR recoil help

Can anyone give me any hints on fixing my recoil on my 2000 SXR 700?? The rope pulls out but does not recoil. I've heard its a b%tch to install. I stopped by the dealer and they said its either the spring or a part where the spring attaches. I can wind the clutch backwards to manually recoil the rope. Is this hurting the engine? I wouldn't think so but just asking.

Gonna ride in a couple days so won't be tearing into it yet!

Funny part is it has about 10 inches of pull...and that's enough to start her! 10,000 miles. The Polaris guys I ride with were most impressed with that! Course it won't do that when its cold, that's why I was asking about the reversing the clutch and spinning the motor backwards to recoil it. Even if we have to do that 5 or 6 times that's no big deal.

Turning the motor backwards won't hurt anything (I'd make sure the kill switch is down), but I'd be asking myself how long that'll last... mile after mile.

Best advise would be to tear into it. Outside of that... make sure you have your emergency clutch rope.

There are a few things that could be the source of the problem. The coil spring could have broken, the connection point for the spring on the plastic pulley could have broken or the bolt which holds holds the entire mechanism together could have backed off allowing the spring to come out of the end connection points. No way to tell until you remove it and open it up. Make sure you have a paitr of safety glasses on when you remove the recoil starter and then when you diassemble it. That spring has a lot of energy stored up. You could continue to start it the way you are now but if something came loose in the starter, it will get tangled up sooner or later. You could remove and repair it or buy a used one. There are probably many on these starters available from members of this site for a reasonable price. I took it apart. I tried to start it this morning at 20 degrees and no go. Turning the clutch backwards wasn't drawing the cord in anymore and the strap around the clutch wasn't working either.

Found the spring was broke. Found a dealer that had it in stock and have it now! Should be okay for our Wednesday ride. I'm sure you'll all hear my cursed trying to put it in!!!!

Spring was $17.00....
 
Let us know what technique you used once you get it back together. It can be tricky to get the spring back and the mechanism put back together. Be careful to protect your eyes when working with that spring!!
 
I gave up. I can't get it to work right. I finally got the spring in right...I think. It recoils. But when I but it on the sled it pulls, goes in slow and with each pull the cord recoils less. So I have something wrong. Can't figure out what so I'm taking to dealer. Now I'm wondering if I can take the entire recoil assembly to them and then bolt it to sled later or if I have to take entire sled to dealer. We'll see!!!!

I hate it when they get the best of me! This will be first time for one of my sleds going to dealer in quite some time....

Make sure the outer winding of the spring tab is through the slot in the metal rim that surrounds the spring. I had one break there, you take out the old one and heat with a torch and bend a new loop. Good as new.
 
Thanks for that info. My old piece broke there. I was wondering if I could just bend another tab.

I'm going to give it another try tonight. Can't let it beat me!!!
 
The "spring" steel that the coil spring is made out of is very tough but it is ductile (easily formed). If you try to bend the tab at the end into the shape you need you are most likely going to brake it rather then bend it.
 
Even if you heat it? I already have a new one but I'm afraid I might chop it into bits with an axe in a fit of rage after I try and fail to get this back together!!!!!!
 
then you don't wanna hear what I went thru with my spring on my 600 last year. ...using the axe is putting it mildly.My hands were totally black and couldn't get the spring in..... :o| #$%&* The words and tools were flying here.Decided to just pick up a whole complete used one from a member on here instead.Was pain in the #$%&* trying to start sled with winding the emergency rope from tool kit for a while... :o| :o|
 
Get yourself a few screws and a board, wrap the spring around the screws that are strategicly spaced apart.when you get it wraped up tight,grab a pair of vise grips and clamp it . pull out the screws, take the spring with vise grips clamped on it and put it in your recoil and hook it in. un clamp the grips and there you have it ...piece of cake..and yes you can bend the spring to make a new hook. Have done this many times..lol...( to diff. recoils that is) wind the rope up then wind the recoil up again clamp it with a clamp so it doesn't let loose on ya take the end of rope and feed it thru the hole in the recoil, tie your handle grip on and put it back on the sled.Its not that bad of a job guys! Now your an expert at assembly of a recoil!
 
All set for our ride tomorrow!!! Sled is fixed and will turn 10,000 miles tomorrow!

I brought the recoil to Carl T Rock sled shop in Parish. Pretty cool place and non-stop people coming in. Waited a while for the guy to work on it. Since I waited so long he said no charge! I still gave him $10.00. I had everything right with the spring but had the lever thingy reversed. So when I pulled it it would not recoil as it was not reversing and was catching....

$10.00 to respool it.
$3.00 for new rope
$17.00 for spring.

Now I know how to do it also.

Went for my ride today and broke the right side lower front arm. I can't win. Got it welded at a shop for $70.00 and made it back to truck.
