here is what i have. i have a 97 sx 700 ridding it last year across the lake and it started to bog down and then just quit. so i have been working on this for 3 months now i have tor down the motor and checked the cylinders and pistons and they are all like new, then i had all the electrical checked out and that was good, then i replaced the fuel pump because there is gas going threw the hose that pumps the fuel pump, and there is still gas in it just not as much, so then i replaced all the needles and seats, and that didn't work i have been threw the carbs 3 times and i have checked all the reeds. now what is throwing me off is that it runs pretty good when you start it up but then starts to bog down and then starts to run just like it is flooding out but it can't be because i have been threw everthing. the only thing i hav'nt checked is the crank has anyone ever seen one twist. to tell you the truth i don't want to junk this sled but i can't figure this out please if anyone can help i would appreciate it. thanks guys ,Josh

Not sure what you have all changed but this is scenario that I had with my old 97. It first had a problem starting. Put new plugs in and then it would go.Then even when warm it took five or so pulls to get it going. And then it just plain did not start.Got an extra CDI but it made no difference. Ohmed the stator and it was good but changed it anyway.Sled started first pull. Went for a short run and it ran perfect. The next day went out for a longer ride and went thru 3 sets of plugs. The plugs were soaked with fuel. Changed the plug caps.Went for a rip and it performed flawlessly. Was just as good as when I bought it 5 years earlier.

I was thinking stator also but he did say electrical has been checked.......and ther is an easy test for it and like stated above do it at room temp.

How many miles on the sled..........around 5000??? I would say stator.

Yea but theres allot of other things called electrical that he could have checked not everyone knows about or can test a stator the right way(not bashing).

There should not be any fuel in that hose, there could be a problem with the new pump. How do you know it has fuel in it? It should not be a clear plastic hose, but a reinforced "rubber" one. After you get the sled running and it starts to run like it is flooding, take a needle nose pliers and squeeze the pulse hose shut and let the sled run a while and see if it improves.
Are you sure the hoses are on the pump right? Was it the correct Yamaha pump?

i did replace the plug caps, and i brought the stator to my local yamaha dealer and had them test and they said it was good, and i had purchased the pump brand new i also put a clear line on the pump to see if there was gas in that line temperalely and i will try to pinch the hose off, now what if it does run better what does that mean. i just want to thank all of you for your answers but i'm down to my last options before i part it out.

Some dealers are a joke,it still can be bad believe me i've seen it here before from other members, test it again warm, try a new used one test pickup coil etc...

"now what is throwing me off is that it runs pretty good when you start it up but then starts to bog down and then starts to run just like it is flooding out"

after this happens check spark right away see what it looks like you want a nice blue arc.

My experience with Stators , have been plentifull , and even though it tests good on the bench , does not apply under load for some reason . When a load is applied to a faulty stator , the engine just fuels up , and then asnowball of stuff happens , imo its worth a shot , stator will be the first thing you sell if you end up parting it out ..

the problem is that i don't have the smarts to check the stator as far as what to do and what to look for and goes the same for the pick up coil. could anyone let me know. once again thanks

Start with the stator.....

1997 stator specs,,use the 700cc specs

Have you checked the harness under the motor? those sx's have been known for rub thru's. Mine did the same thing yours is doin . start it runs great then starts to miss ,bogs down and quits ..some times it starts right back up somtimes it don't.Also by pass the tors. somtimes the linkage on those things hangs up and the tors kicks in,then runs fine the throttle cable rides up and it dies down, especialy if you turn the steering a little... just some things you should check!

I wonder how the stator would test if you warmed it up and then tested it? Or, if they could do some kind of load test? I assume you took it in to them nice and cool, and then they just ohmed it out? You said the sled runs good at first....

Another kind of off-the-wall idea that occurred to me, maybe daman or someone else will remember: Aren't these the year of sleds that were notorious for the oiler failing in the wide open position? Could it be fouling out plugs very quickly? This idea doesn't really fit in with you running it hard on a lake and then it just conking out, but maybe you're fighting two problems and have already cured the first? My money is still on the stator though.

the last stator i checked a year or two ago i tossed in the oven on the lowest heat setting for 10mins got it nice and warm then Ohm'd it on the kitchen table.

the oil pumps on triple engines were fine(but one could check ratio and determine
if there's a problem) it was the twins that had some issues, the triples had the bad crank bearing design that sometimes failed but that was latter fixed in '98.

so i now took the pipes off for some stupid thing i was trying and when i had them off i started it up and gas just come shooting right out of the center cylinder and there is no suction on the carb from that cylinder. what sucks is that we are just getting 20" of snow in the next two days and it looks like i will get more use out of my snowblower than my snowmobile.

Sledmaster not bashing but CALM DOWN and listen the these guys. It is not that hard. But everything has to be don't systematically or you will go no where!!!! I to can tell you that dealers miss stuff. Check the stator when warm. Dry that cylinder out and let is sit overnight does it fill up again(carb floats). It is something simple you just have to take it one step at a time. Maybe you missed something!! Hope it works out for you!!!!!!Good luck!!!!RR

first of all i want to take the time to thank everyone for there suggestions, but i have just done all that was said, now wether i did them right i have no clue but it is out of my hands now i have brought it in to the dealer witch i have never done before but i really can't part this out and get rid of it, it was a good machine, thanks guys
