I have a broken loop on one of my transfer rods, so i took the 2 bolts out of the ends of the top shaft that runs to each side of the tunnel, but now i can't get the wheel to slide off the shaft so that i can replace the broken loop. My question is are these suppose to slide off easily or is there a trick to getting these off. Do i just need to beat on it a little harder to get it to slide off.

removal of transfer rod

I removed these with a large "c" clamp and a few blocks of wood. One block behind the wheel, one in front of the shaft, and a couple between those two blocks. The "C" clamp goes over the entire stack as close as possible to the center of the shaft. The wheels are pressed, and the shaft is aluminum so you don't want to beat on it. A little penetrating oil where the shaft meets the bearing will help too. An extra set of hand are helpful. I thought a gear puller might work, but it may also break the wheel.

The BFH method.........

I've done this several times successfully by dropping the rear suspension below the large wheels. Get a bolt of the same thread, and maybe a little shorter than the original bolts. Thread it into the shaft and snug it up(not to tight, you need to get it out.). Now use a rubber ? mallet and bang on the bolt in the end of the shaft you just installed or a big #$%&* hammer and a piece of short round stock or something, becareful not to damage the head of the bolt to much so you can get it back out. This method does work and it will break free, they are not that tight, usually once they start moving it goes fast. Also, if you are changing both sides you only have to pull the one side and pull the shaft out, replace parts, thread back through, install the one side back on ( bolt, washers and pull it back through). done, hope this makes sense and help...
