96 vmax 600 problems

ok so i just got my first sled..a 96 vmax 600 xt..its kinda in rough shape but im workin on it..so far ive tuned it up,cleaned the carbs,made and installed 3 inch drop brackets to raise up the rear end..the body could use a paint job but that will have to wait till summer cause i dont have a garage..the problems are the speedo doesnt work,it doesnt turn good at all and its a kinda slow on takeoff..can anyone give me some ideas or help solving these issues..like i said im new to snowmobiles and im learning as i go along..also the track is in nice shape..ive been told to check the sliders and hyfaxes..what the hell are hyfaxes?? and how do i know when the sliders need to be changed?? i would like to change the skis but they seem to be a different size from the rest of the sleds..what skis will fit on mine?? any tips or info will really help..thanks...
 
I would go thru the clutches and check the flyweights, rollers, and springs. also might wanna check that bearing on drive shaft were the speedo hooks in, thats what usually causes the speedo to quit.
 
There is a little piece that goes from the speedo housing to the drive shaft it sometimes breaks off inside the housing in the picture below (this is located under the secondary)

Sometimes the cable goes but i have found on the DX and my dads 94 that the housing was the problem.

Definetly look at the primary and secondary, when it takes off slow does it rev up quick or not?

I would suspect flat spots on the rollers and some bad bushings this will make it a dog for sure.

I put a set of ski's off a 2002 Ski-don't MXZ They made a huge difference with flotation and the 4" carbides (no studs in track) made it turn very well.
I had to make some slights modifications to the ski's to get them to fit but you will find this for most retrofit applications on our sleds it isn't anything too dificult.


As for maintaining the sled you will want to look at the rear suspension and find every grease zerk, Greese the living tar out of these and during the summer (or sooner) take out the shafts and inspect for wear (mine was neglected and the shafts were getting tore up bad (can get expensive)

mine was a slug to on takeoff put stiffer spring in primary when you check it over,as for turning tighten up front limit strap and adjust front strut spring preasure, there is a dail under rubber cap if its an xt, theres 12 clicks from soft to firm, (adj even) mine is set to 6 clicks for example but i didnt lower the skid, so you will have to experiment and see what works, also if scags are worn it will effect turning on mine i have usi skis with 6 or 8in carbide seem to work ok (turns a little hard)but no push, and my track is picked which makes a difference i took out the picks and then the ski preasure was to much and would tail whip

ok ill check behind the driveshaft housing and see what it looks like..as for the clutches i dont even know where to begin..when i gun it it doesnt rev up very fast..it starts sluggish then it will start taking off..and what rollers and bushings do i check?? the ski problem i can fix..im pretty good at making stuff fit..im planning on bringing it inside the garage at work soon so i can grease everything up..is there anywhere i can buy a ready to bolt on clutch for this sled?? as cheap as possible as my friggin wife gives me the death eyes everytime i look at the sled..lol..thanks braindead1684..and thanks j.k.auto..ill be changing the chaincase oil after christmas..

i know nothing about these clutches..ive been told to stay away from them unless i really know what im doing so ill probably have to take it to a shop for any clutch work..im wondering if there is anyplace i could buy a complete ready to bolt on clutch i can get..even one a little modified for quicker acceleration....im gonna check ebay for some used skis..what skis should i look for that will require less modding to fit my sled?? skidoo?? arctic cat?? ect ect..

I know that dropping money into the sled is best to be avoided, but Kimpex makes plastic skis that are drop in replacements for the 96 vmax. $270 shipped complete with 6" carbides and rubber bump stops on ebay if you search Kimpex + vmax. Though fabbing up a pair of plastic take offs would be cheaper...
 
The speedo cable broke on mine the last time I broke a belt might want to check that out too.I bought a set of slydog skis they seem to be pretty good so far, check out johnmaster.net he sells them with mount kits specific for the tss vmax installation was a cakewalk.

One more shout out to johnmaster.net. I was able to pick up the skis in person because I live near him. The skis went together without issue, he even supplies the custom cut rubber bump stops. Good guy to deal with.
 
thanks for the info on the skis guys..i checked out johnmaster and they have good prices..but i wont do very much sledding.mostly messin around with the kids in the yard and a few hours out on the trails every once in a while..so i might just buy a new set of ski skins and a set or carbides..it will be a good hundred bucks cheaper plus my steel skis are still in great shape..hope that will solve my turning problem..i would hate to waste my money..
 
I need some help too, this is my first sled (96 vmax 600) and was riding yesterday, heard some squeeling then knocking/thumping. got it home took the speedo cover off and no bearing, the drive axle is just resting on the case. I was about to order the bearing in then notices some oil leaking from the other chaincase side. I cant really tell where its coming from either. ideas?!!
 
if the bearing went it may have taken out the chaincase bearing and allowed it to leak on that side, open the case and inspect, you wouldn't want to run it out of lube in there deep $$$ quick.

ALso you may want to repost this in a new thread if that doesn't work, that way others will see it easier.
