Buddy needs some more help!solved/ fuel topic now...

Hey guys!

His 00 srx700 is starting to bog out like its running on 2 cylinders although all 3 are working... (keeps bogging) at 1 3/4 turns it was hanging at 2000rpms sometimes so i told mine 1/4 turn more should cure it.

His spark plugs are really tan and engine is running hot... any ideas...

the only thing he has been playing with is his fuel screw (because his sled had a idle hang) which I got him to open up the fuel screw until it was gone... he is at 2 turns out.. and it started doing what i mentioned above..

any ideas what it can be!?

Turn the fuel screws back down & blip the choke to bring down the idle.

would that be causing it to bog and run hot? and make the plugs tan?

Hes turning them back down to 1 3/4 which had a very little idle hang at 2000 rpm once in a while... is that still to high?

Thanks turk

Were the carbs cleaned thoroughly recently? Many members are having problems due to dirty carbs. They need to be very carefully cleaned and inspected.

Yea... they where cleaned begining of the season... his sled was running mint... until he took em out and turned the fuel screw from 1 3/4 to 2.... then started to run hot and bog...

what does it idle at when it finally comes down? Try turning the idle screw down another 100-200 rpm maybe. I know mt viper is really sensitive to the idle being higher than 1700 RPM

Whats the elevation? 1 3/4 seems alot

his is idling at 1800 if im right...

his elevation is next to the same as me more or less which is about CORRECTION... 300 feet ... im around that too i think.. not 100% though...

what should his fuel screw be turned at? when it was a 1 1/4 turn he was having a bad idle hang at 3000rpm... so i told him try 1 1/2... and it was hanging still just not as long... then went to 1 3/4 and was hanging just a tiny bit at 2000... then at 2 turns wel.. yea...

I am at 1500 ft above and I have a few problems on start up when cold, idling too high, revs to 3500, until I cut the choke, but never on a hang idle when I come back from a ride. Is his hang idle after a good razz?

yea... even after a good ride it still has the idle hang... and from what ive read... if you got a idle hang its ur idle screw or pilot jets that are to small.. but since he is stock... I was figuring he could turn them out some more and it would cure it

like i said, turn the idle down another 100RPM and see how that is. From my experience there is a chance you will still get occaissional idle hang though. If it not often then you aren't too bad. If blipping the throttle doesn't make the occaisionalt hang go away, the choke blip will cure it for sure.

Correct me if I am wrong, stock jetting at 300ft above are you sure of this? can we see the jetting or can you tell us the sizes of the mains and pilots please?

From my experience with bikes, a hanging idle means its lean. If u blip the throttle and it drops lower then the set idle, then returns to set idle, its rich.

If its running on 2 cylinders when its idling but comes onto all 3 when you give it more throttle, then theres something wrong with the idle circuit (pilot jet plugged, circuit itself is blocked, etc)

Carbs clean?
I run my pilots at 2.25
Check throttle cable( make sure its not to tight)
Turn down idle to 1600-1700

well... he also changed out his MBRP back to his stock one... would that do anything too? He backed down the fuel screws to 1 3/4 and put the mbrp back on and he said its running mint again...

As for his jetting... I txted him this mornin but prob still passed out lol... so ill have to wait and see... though im positive its stock 00 jetting...

Kirk... I got 300ft from google it could be wrong... but if you look at my signature and my jetting... its not that much higher jetting then stock and i got a port and polish... and my fuel screws are at a 1/ 1/2 turns.. and im also in that 300-500 ft bracket...

Kneedown... thats what I though too (about the lean part) hense I got him to increase his fuel screws to get rid of the idle hang...

Carbs are definately clean at begining of season... I beleive the calbe was set correctly... as it just started doing this last night and he already put a good few km's/miles on here this winter (couple hundred i think)

02mountainviper... lowering the idle might help cure the hang ilde slightly? if a minor idle hang isnt abnormal and doesnt hurt the engine... I wouldn't worry about it... though I do know increasing his fuel screws to 1 3/4 cured alot/most of the idle hang... I know my idle is set to about 1700... its just above the 1500 line..

How come urs are open so much at 2.25 turns... wouldnt a bigger pilot jet just mean u need to open the fuel screw less?

Thanks for the help so far everyone!

Run some isopropyl alchohol [gas line anti freeze] thru it...No don't drink it!!! lol !
It may be iciing up.
I add a bit of isopropyl at ever fill up.

Ill def mention it to him!... thanks sideshow!

Im going to look into that myself too prob a good idea to use since its not in a heated garage to begin with... though my carb heaters are on 24/7

Fuel tanks create an amazing amount of water over a period of time through condensation, not to mention water thats potentially in the fuel from the pumps!
