took the girlfriend out for a spin for the first time on the sled this year...went about a mile with everything runny great...and then i lost power. sounded like i dropped a cylinder. so i have checked the comepression and have 125psi in all three. so i moved on to carburation and cleaned the carbs which are spotless and tried to fire it up. i now have back firing past the y pipe upon stat up.Now it doesnt want to start at all. has fire in all plugs whick are brand new. i set the carbs are 1.25 turns on the mixture screw and all jets are crystal clean. im kinda stumped...am i missing something? any thoughs. i also noticed the fuel line to the carbs frosted after i took the carbs off. is this normal.

Last years old fuel. Empty out the tank; reclean the carbs & you should be good to go.

cant be the gas ive put two tanks threw it already...is there a chance that the pipe is plugged up....i just started again and it looked like the pipe was moving up and down....and reving up and down...then dies...

pipes are good....it seems to rev up and down and back fire. im thinking it has to be something to do with carburation. i double checked the fire and it is strong. my back is starting to hurt from pulling it over....next sled is gonna have electric start.

I thinks it,s time for a new stator. very common in older 700 redheads. I replaced a few in my day.

the guy i bought it off of said he had the stator replace last winter....is there a way to test them...where are they located and what do they do?

Where the recoil is, behind that will be your stator, as far as how to test them, I'm not sure, so I'll leave that to the experts.

check for wire rub thru and when its running and backfireing put the choke on and see if there is a diff, if the fuel line frosted you may have new bad fuel. dirty or partially plugged seats (needle/seat/float in carb)if you left in last years fuel it turns into a clear jelly and will plug any filter so check your fuel flow just some thoughts

the fuel is new i put 66 miles on it so far this year and up until the other day it started droping cylinders and fuel guage/ and speedometer stopped working. im going to inspect the wires and stator tomorow...after opening presents...

definately electrical & check to see if stator installed was used.

it is possible you have some water in the tank get some red heet or isopropyl alcohol and dry your fuel system.the water plugs the fuel filter and wont let gas flow through so your sled runs lean.yes you can run gas through the sled but water just doesnt dissappear by itself.

700sx

Although it appears electrical, I also own a 700sx which was backfiring last week and it took riding with 1/2 choke to cure it. I know you cleaned the carbs, but any chance you didnt pull out the pilot jets and get them 100% cleaned out. It took me 20 minutes of carb spraying / soaking cycles to get them finally cleaned out as I dont have an air compressor. Looking thru the pilot hole with a lamp in the background was my way of ensurign they were finally clean.

im gonna see about this stator situation for now....i have cleaned the carbs three times this season. i have the recoil off now...i assume im going to need a harmonic ballancer puller to take the flywheel off. is there some points one the stator that i can ohm out for resistance to confirm that its bad.

Ok so i tested the leads as shown on the specs. Sourse coil resistance Im getting "411" ohms from Brown-Black/Red which is in specs. but "0" ohms on my sourse coil resistance between Brown-Brown/Red I got 198 ohms on my pick up coil resistance. W/R-W/G

So what is my source coil. is that the stator or something else.?

411 is good, to check the one your geting 0 on you put one lead on brown or on brown/red not shur it's been awhile. and the other lead to ground like the case.

I put brown/red to ground. And got 96 ohms....that dont seem right...does it?

High speed coil should read 392-479 you have 411. low speed coil should read 78-94 you have 96. pickup coil should be 189-231 you have 198. there's one more circut on the stator it's the lighting coil. resistance between the black and the white should read 0.36 ohms +/- 10% all readings are at 68 degrees.
