Exciter SX teardown - has begun

If all goes well, the skid and track should be installed later tonight. I forgot to get new front limiter straps, otherwise Id have done it last night

Missed out on those C&A skis, but still looking for the right bargain. The entire skid was sanded down, and painted flat black, and I must say Im happy with it. Sucks that Royal Distributing didnt have BLACK sliders, so went with red ones

Debating on somewhat de-decaling the sled a bit. I may remove the small stickers beside the headlight, and the one of the hood, while leaving the sides and tunnel decals

To be honest, Id love to use the same decal package, but have the colours changed...It will still be un-mistakable as being an Exciter SX, but the pink is quickly losing its appeal....lol

I'll snap a few more pics tonight if I decide to head out to the shop, so you can see how funny the TINY 7 tooth drivers look...i still do a double take when I catch a glimpse of the drive shaft.

Still no sign of top end parts, funny I ordered the track a full week after, and it arrived in no time!!

Chilli,
Your serious if you want that track. The 570 will pull that no problem.

The SX was Yamaha finaly admiting and fixing the problem with the Exciter applying a few things (clutching) to make it faster then the previous years (my opinion)

Pogo sticks are for people who want a plush, touring ride.
38VM carbs caused Exciters to seize at trail speeds.
in 91 Yamaha understood the problem and upgraded the suspension.
Pogo sticks still suck if your not touring.
96 XT ( the 2nd sled that was never ment to be srx500 ) proves this.

The EX570 is one of Yamaha's best twins ever built.
Work within the limitations of the chassie and you can do anything.
DUDE, I DISAGREE. SORRY. THE CLUTCHING IN THE EXCITER SX WAS TERRIBLE. THAT WAS NOT INPROVED TO MAKE THIS THE GREAT SLED IT WAS. MAKING THIS SLED CLOSER TO THE VMAX 4 THAN PAST EXCITERS WAS WHAT DID PLUS ALOT MORE HORSEPOWER, FLATSIDE CARBS, WIDER SKI STANCE AND HIGH COMPRESSION MOTOR. TONS OF GAINS THROUGH CLUTCHING THESE SLEDS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Hey Yamie Toney

Now that you got me on the topic, Im looking for some clutching and gearing advice.

AS you know, I dropped to 7 tooth drivers, so Im assuming that I'll want some of the top speed back.

So based on 7 tooth drivers, stock gears/chain and stock clutching all as of now. Where do you think I should be heading to keep it wicked for get up n go in the deep, as well as not a dog on lake runs?

Let me know what u think

WHEN YOUR READY CHILLI, I GIVE YA THE EXACT CLUTCH SET-UP THATS IN MINE. NOW THE EXCITER SX WAS GEARED PRETTY LOW RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. 17-33 STOCK @ 1.94. NOW WITH THE DRIVERS YOU HAVE GONE TWO , YOUR GONNA HAVE TO INCRESE TOP SPROCKET SIZE ALOT. MY GUESS AROUND A 22/33 OTHER WISE YOU WILL BE GEARED VERY LOW. 3:16 (yammie tony)

IM a complete newb with gearing so bare with me

So if Im chaging the sprocket, can I keep the same bottom gear and chain? Should be able to Id assume

As far as the clutching, IM all ears, and Ive been ordering parts like mad...why stop now? lol

Any of the sprocket or clutch stuff, is this something you may have lying around by chance?

YOU CAN USE YOUR BOTTOM GEAR, BUT YOUR GONNA NEED DEFFERENT CHAIN. I WOULD CALL MICRO BELMONT, I DON,T SEE YAMAHA GEARS FOR THE EXCITER SX UP THAT HIGH. YOUR GONNA NEED AFTERMARKET.
RUN THIS SET-UP.
8AB WEIGHTS/ WITH 4.5 RIVETS IN BOTH HOLES
SRX Y-W-Y SPRING.
YOU WILL NEED TALL COVER
ORDER FROM HAUCK A 42-39 CAM, SET AT B-3. ASK AWAY ANY QUESTIONS. 3:16 (yammie tony)

SRX USE TALL COVER (cap on priimary) SPRINGS, EXCITER SX CAME WITH SHORT COVER. CAN,T USE THAT WITH A SRX SPRING YOU COULD HAVE BINDING ISSUES. CAM IS SAME AS HELIX FOR SECONDARY. SORRY lol. 3;16 (yammie tony)

So, to my suprise, top end parts arrived yesterday. Got the pistons installed, and the cylinders in place....ran out of time to torque everything down.

Ran into an issue with the brakes.....ive re-assembed 3 times, and every time, once bolts are tight that hold back of caliper to top of chaincase, the disk wont move and the brake lever is rock hard....you back the bolts off like 1-8th of a turn, the the brake lever softens....IM at a loss, there only sems to be 1 way to assemble, and I did it several times, but as soon as I tighten the bolts, brake isd locked on

There is this metal "bracket" i guess you'd call it that came off with the brakes, but none of the exploded views show this. I assumed maybe this went between the caliper pieces to act as a spacer, but when I tried that, same

Any tricks for these brakes?

I figured Id sahre some of the pics from the build:

pic of pistons compared to srx one...look at the BLOW BY!!!

UPDATE

So got the skid installed today and buttoned up the top end.

ISSUE - the lugs are so tall, they are rubbing on the under-seat coolers that run the length lof the tunnel..

Im going to fab up some drop brackets to lover the skid a bit and buy me some room. Likely have to lower the small wheels as well, as the track is getting squished there too. Man is this thins going to hual *** when shes done, im on love with this track, kinda wish the srx had the same

Heres a few pics from tonight

If your still having trouble with your brakes, I had the same issue, ended up being the brake piston had been pushed out to full adjustment, so when you tighten the caplier it clamps the disk. I had to remove the piston and wind it back in. If you have a manual it shows you how.

Naw, it was exactly like I suspected. The piston was not retracting far enough back into caliper body

Found a replacement on ebay that looked brand new for 10 bucks, just finished installing it, and it works perfect now.

Also finished installing the black on black C&A Razors (looks like a whole new angry sled)......man this is going to be a beast!!

Unfortunately even with the drop brackets, the tips of my track lugs rub on the VERY FRONT of the cooler, right up near the drivers :(

So Im going to have to slightly trim each one....its so marginal it could rub itself down, but I never lied that idea so....next shed night, few beers, couple utility knives and voila

Fresh pics as soon I can

Got a Bender Single pipe on my 92 Exciter and am very happy with it. It has a nice rumble to it and raps when you are on the throttle. Went up one size on the jetting is all. Have had zero problems with the motor.

93 Sx

The dude I sold my 93 SX to told me he installed a 2009 Mono shock system out of a Vector. He stated the bolt holes lined right up. I told him it was quick but he was suprised how quick they are. He said it pulls his 93 V Max 750 up untill 70 or so. This guy owns a Yamaha Dealership in ME and never had a chance to own a 93 SX. He said he had a 92 all set up. But there was no comparison. Still waiting for him to send pic's to me of the setup. It is supposed to look way cool and ride awsome.
