I am new to this site and I just picked up a 97 vmax sx 700 and was debating on what oil to run in it. I haven't seen the sled yet but from what I have gathered is that non-power valve sleds don't really need sythetic oil (although there are probably people that disagree/wouln't do it). So my main question is, do the 97 vmax 700's have power valves? From what I have been able to find so far it appears that they don't but I can't seem to find a definative answer. So once this answer is confirmed then I can determine if the oil I got is good for me to run. I picked up 8L of Shell Advance Premium oil (non-sythetic) because I was under the impression that mineral oil is what is called for in these sleds from the factory (although synthetic wouln't hurt by any means). I have been running blue marble for the past 2 winters in my 93 phazer and have a feeling it is a little overkill, especially at $50 for 4 liters and was thinking about switching over to the Shell oil in that too. Anyways, if someone could help me out with the power valve delima I'd appreciate it.

I have another question about the silencer boring that can be done on this sled. It says to use a 2" hole saw but I was wondering if a 2" 1/8 hole would work? I don't know if the 2" was determined due to it being the largest size that can fit in though the silencer opening or if it was just determined to be a decent size to drill out. I can't imagine the extra 1/8th of an inch would make that much of a difference but I thought I would make a post and see what people with more experience with this sled have to say. Thanks in advance.
 
Your '97 Sx700 is a non-powervalve motor. The ONLY sleds that have powervalves are the SRX, Viper. Run whatever oil you see fit. There is no "real science" that states you should run this oil over that oil IMHO it ALL personal preference.

Your question on silencer boring, YOu'll have to measure the opening to see if your bit will fit, 2 1/8" mya just be too large. T
 
The oil question has been beat to death on here in the last 10 years. Do a search when lookinng for info. In that sled run the cheapest walmart 2 stroke oil u can buy.
 
I wasn't really worried about what type of oil just wanted to make sure it doesn't have power valves and required synthetic. Since its not I'll run mineral oil. Hopefully next week I will get to see the sled for the first time and take it for a run. I'll have to measure the opening to see if the 2"1/8th bit will fit in the silencer.
 
3000 miles from what my dad told me...he was the one that found it for me and its at his place till I can get home to get it. I'm looking forward to driving it, should be a step up from the 93 Phazer II
 
I was thinking about doing the REED Stopper Notch along with the silencer boring but wasn't really sure if it would be that noticable or not. For some reason I can only look at the 1st page of the forums for the Vmax, SXR, SX..etc section which sucks, cause probably most of that info is in there.
 
Get a different skid for that sled...you will love the results. I just threw a pro-x skid under my 97 700 and its a whole new sled. I can honestly say that was the best money I have spent on that sled to this point. Plus it only takes a few hours to install.
 
Thanks daman, fixed it. As for the skid, I doubt I'll be investing too much into this sled since its over 10 years old and I want to get a REV 800R but have started to rebuild my car and just wanted something to get me through this winter. I love the ride of the Revs and that will be the next upgrade I'll make. I was just looking for some help to give me a little extra with this sled (to keep up with the revs I run with), but now see the small mods aren't really going to gain me that much but every little bit does help.
 
One of Turks clutch setups with a set of used triple pipes, the correct jetting and some good traction and you'll be able to put those 800's in their place for alot less $$$ than a new Doo XP...

May be able to beat it in a straight line, but with the 800R weighing in at around 425lbs and 152hp thats a wicked power to weight and the ride of the revs is amazing. We have always had yamaha's until my dad just picked up his rev and I must say its the most comfortable sled I have ever rode, and it only has a 600 twin in it and it will most likely be faster than mine on the trails. Maybe on a long lake I'll take it but have to see if we get any snow this week to take it for my first run.
