Wrapping Pipes ??

I'm finally installing my AAEN pipes this weekend. According to the installation instructions I need to wrap the pipes to prevent cracking if I'm planning to do any powder. Well, since that's about all I do I figure I should wrap them with something.

Does this not effect the performance of the pipe?

What do you guys use to wrap the pipe and how do you do it ?

i have no idea what the wrap is made of but they use something like that on airplane exhaust for when using skis. dads plane is a j-3 piper cub. try at the local airstrip. someone there must know what this stuff is.
 
I can get exhaust tape for you, but you would be much happier getting them ceramic coated. Tape sucks, always comes loose, is real crap compared to ceramic coating. Then, they look like they have been chromed. Way nicer.
 
If I remember right wrapping the pipes voids the MFGR warranty. May want to check first. I am with KB on the ceramic coating. If ya can go that way. ;)!
 
Coating

No one up here in Northern Ontario does the ceramic that I know of. I talked to a local guy about some wrap. Said that he use to use asbestos. Can't buy it any more, and he just gave a whole wack away. Too late.

dude the closest guy i know of for ceramic coating is in barrie. cant remember the ph#. but the dealer shoud know it. the guy at royal distributing gave it to me.
 
Sorry, I obviously don't know enough about pipes. :o| Why would you spend a small fortune on a set of pipes that don't work properly if you ride your machine in "snow"??? Wouldn't they be coated and/or wrapped when you buy them if that's what makes them work??
Hey, don't take this the wrong way. I'm not questioning your wisdom when it comes to sleds. Just curious in case i ever get a set of pipes.
 
I don't know if I'm alone here, but I don't hear too many stories about pipes cracking. Wonder why AAEN would put something like that in their instructions?
 
I have Aaen triples i have never had a problem with cracking till i lost a spring and hit the bulkhead. But other then that i play in powder and never cracked a pipe from result of snow!
 
Pipes

OUCH FLYING DUTCHY,

I bought the pipes used, didn't think there would be any big deal with going in powder, and there isn't. Just there's a note on my installation instructions from AAEN

Quote " Note: When riding in powder snow we recommend you put on some type of heat wrap material to prevent creacking of the pipes. "

I think I'm just going to get some thin aluminum and make some guards for the pipes too keep the snow off. I'll custom wrap them, sure I can get it to look ok.

Aaen's pipes are made of very thin sheet metal, they recomend wrapping them to prevent cracking. Hot pipe meets cold snow....

The aftermarket makes pipes out of thin material to keep weight down, I've seen Aaen, Bender, and Power Inc pipes crack. As the pipes get more miles on them they get brittle, from the heating, cooling process.
 
SXR......Sorry, i'm not picking on you. :WayCool: It's just nice to know if i ever get pipes, i'll know what to expect. I wish i had the extra $$ to spend on my sleds. I would love to open the hood a see a set of ceramic coated pipes under there.
 
Header wrap

Olav's pipes are thin when compared to Bender, SLP & others. The guys over on snowest really like the Aaens on the 800 Rotax when wrapped (but hate them unwrapped) & run in the mountains. My Aaens are coated & have had a chit load of snow on them their life in my Viper no cracks but you can see where they touch each other..... Cant bitch too much for 6000 off-tral miles.

Hey guys

I use a wrap that I get through Dennis Kirk or Whal Bros racing. Pretty sure its the same as automotive header wrap. Cheap, compaired to coatings... $40 or so for a 50 ft roll
 
www.jet-hot.com You send your pipes to them for coating, they are the best in the industry for ceramic coating, your pipes will look amazing, last 10x as long, will never rust, and coating will reduce engine bay temps 30-50% which results in better performance (2-3 hp). I wouldn't waste my time trying to fabricate something. Ceramic coating costs only $75 per pipe and it's well worth it considering all the advantages of coating. Jet Hot will have your pipes ready in about 3-5 days.
