Viper stalls when choke flipped off

Started my 2002 viper up for the first thing this year and was running it around the yard. All was going well but when I flipped the choke off the sled lost power and died. I put the choke back on and it started up and ran fine until I flipped the choke off again. I pulled the carbs and checked the float bowels and blew air to make sure the passages were clear. I replaced the carbs and restarted but it ran the same with no change. I didn't have a manuel for settings so I didn't want to change anything at that time. I am new to yamaha's so any ideas will be appreciated. I ran fine last year as I had it for the last month of the season.
 
You'll need to pull the carbs back off and clean out the jets, the pilot jets plug up easily after sitting all summer... and get some new gas in the system if you havent already
 
I'm having the same issue. Is there a starting point for the idle adjustment??? I'll be pulling my carbs later this week once I get the duck boat out.
 
I cleaned the carbs, reset the power valves and we are back on track. Running good though just going around my yard. Can't wait to get her on the trails. Thanks for the help everyone. ;)! to a great site.
 
Hmm, I always let my Viper warm up for about 10 mins before ever touching the throttle.

Full choke on until it starts, then half choke for a few mins, and then off choke until it idles down to 1500-1800 and let it sit there until the running boards are warm... touch the throttle before it's warm, and it won't stay at idle.

I know most guys follow this procedure... try it out...

What you don't go wide open as soon as that 3rd cylinder fires? :ban: :beer:
 
Had the same issue when i started mine the first time this year. tore the carbs down to find every pilot jet clogged. cleaned them out with carb cleaner and compressed air and new fuel in the tank and off i was....
 
I all so have a 2002 Virper ER. It is doing the same thing. Have had the Carbs off and cleaned 5 times. Can not find the clog in the pilot circuit any where. the sled will back fire.
I have not cleaned power valves. Will do that. Dont think they have been done.

Does this problem need to be in the jets or something else.

PS all compressions are equal at 127 with my gauge.

Clean the carbs, the pilot jets are clogged up. look in the tech section it will show you how to do it!:carbs:
 
Do NOT USE ETHANOL FUEL! Use only NON ethanol.fuel. Had issues with contamination changed to better fuel a no problem
 
Also when u clean carbs replace clogged pilot jets with new ones. The orifices are so small it doesn't take much restriction if them suckers are not sqeaky clean. Aint worth the cost of the motor! Clean clean clean them carbs.
