Carbs and Sea Foam

I used Sea Foam for the first time last spring. This fall the Carbs were the dirtiest I've ever seen. I know that's from the fuel, but.....

Will go back to Stabil next spring.

My girl and I both have Vipers. We summerize them with sta-bil every year and start them monthly. This past summer we skipped a month :o| and now both sleds won't stay running without choke and/or throttle. I'm sure it's dirty carbs, but I'm wondering if we used Sea Foam instead of sta-bil would it have made a difference?

If you read your owner's guide, it'll tell you not to run your sled once a month during the off season (IMO, unless you can get it really hot to the point of overheating). It also says that unless you are sure you aren't using ethanol fuel (here in Michigan, there is no such thing as high octane fuel without it), drain the fuel and use fresh, in season fuel the following season. It's my understanding that the anti-knock additives will "disepate" during long storage and what you thought was 91 octane ends up being less than that.

I also see more wax build-up with today's fuel. If you don't have fuel in the bowls, there isn't much chance for wax build-up. I would guess the vast majority of first ride burndowns is related to either wax clogged jets or detonation from less than required octane. How many posts do we see about idle/pilot issues when the snow starts to fly... a lot!

I drain the tank to near empty, run the sled until hot and then fog while running then as it's running out of fuel, use the choke to suck the last bit of fuel from the carbs. It's a bit of a Chinese fire drill with empty fogging cans flying, thottle jockeying and choke flipping but it's piece of mind. Loosen the track, spray EVERYTHING down with silicone spray, pull the shocks for overhaul, jack it up and cover.

I don't have anything against fuel stabalizer and use it occationally in my small outboard and other small engines, but with today's fuel, I'll follow the manufacture's recommendations for my high perforamance triple.

To answer your post, your pilots are clogged but the above long winded post is to point out the reason why.

...and to get Gary going - crushing the competition is the American way!

There is enough of a "fan base" out there that there is NO NEED to crush the competition when it comes to synthetic lubricants... "ester" based lubricants have been used by UNCLE SAM since the 1940's,,,, WAY BEFORE amsoil came to be... "ester" based lubricants costs $30.00 a QUART and amsoil makes the claim that they can do the same thing for less than 10.00 a Quart... it DOESNT WORK THAT WAY.. Never has,,, never will... Do you think amsoil is paying ,,lets say,,, 25.00 a quart and selling it to you for 10.00 a quart???? see my point???? They are telling you some BULLCRAP.... and you're believing it???????

Fish on!!!

When I started using Amsoil 25 some odd years ago there was no fan base. I don't remember seeing any kind of advertising until they're involvement in snowcross.

I don't pay much attention to what they say, just results. And even then I'm sure there is a lower cost alternative but I've been using it out of habit. As they say, don't mess with success.

Anyhow, I hope you had a nice Christmas and happy New Year to you and your's my Chi-town friend!

That kills me (LOL). I knew it was comming before i read down to the next post. Happy new years guys!!!!

I've read about a thousand different ways that you guys prefer to store sleds, etc.
Nobody, that I have read, (after fogging)leaves the carbs totally cleaned and dry over the storage season and feels that they are good for the upcoming riding season.
Always has worked for me.

Starting them up once a month is the worse thing you can do. Just use fuel stabilizer and fog it in the spring and don't start it until the winter, after you clean the carbs of course!

Why is starting once a month the worst thing?

your causing condensation in the exhausts and so on if you dont let it run to temp... and burning old fuel...

I just read through the replies and that seems to be the general consensus. Thanks for the reply!

The best thing to do is fogg then treat fuel OR drain carbs, kiss her good night and tell her see ya next winter.

No prob.... gets long reading through posts to answer 1 question like that...

yeap... no matter how much you miss her... park it and say happy hybernating...lol...

I used Sta Bil marine this spring and I am having the same problem with the idle. I haven't had a chance to pull the carbs off and clean them yet, but I typically do that before every year anyway. It is much easier and cheaper than burning a piston. Some people are saying that they are having problems with the E10 fuel eating the carb boots and gas lines as well and it is costing them quite a bit of money at the dealer with the pre season tune ups.

I did the atf method of taking off fuel line and put it in a quart of atf. I did this last spring and this winter the carbs were spotless ,motor fogged ,presto!
