Catastrophic failure

well drove 6 hours to go riding ...paid 70 buck for 2 permits ,80 dollars in gas ,and 70 for a hotel ...to take a quick 30 to 40 mile ride ....on my way to the deer antler inn bar in wellston ...and than it come to a end ....soundes like a rock hitting the skid plate than ting ting ting ting .....than sled didnt want to go and sounded like gears grinding ...so i remembered last year i had problem with tensioner ...than come a pack of rider pull up stop and have the nerve to tell me to get the F*** out of the way ....and than they took off ....not having a strap i called the guy i was meeting up with and he brought me a strap to pull it the last 1/4 mile to the bar .....got it into the light and got out the flash light and than i saww it ......now trying to figure out what caused this any ideas ....i thought crank went out of phase but no its been welded ....thought mabe rust pulled the bearing and not a sign of rust or any contamination ....any thing else i should look at ?

Ouch!! That is nasty!
What is left of the piston?
Saw a Trail mod 650 Indy that ended up in a similar state after going severely lean due to a crankseal leak and then driven a long ways on the other two cylinders ,because of necessity to get from a remote area in extreme cold . All that was left of the piston was two globs of aluminum at the end of the piston pin and the rod finally let go as well leaving similar damage to the case.

The good news is:
-it happened in 2009, it was a nasty year, 2010 can only be better!
-what caused it should not be a problem after the complete rebuild
that you'll be doing!
 
did these guys who stopped not ask if you needed help.Where they green or yellow????That is pretty bad,not mentioning your motor.That is so unfortunate for you,can't believe what I see in your pic.Makes me nervous to go out for a ride now...ouch!!! Happy New Year anyways,if that helps.
 
look like the piston explose for some reason and squeeze bettween rod and case ... really sucks
 
I have heard that if the carbs are not cleaned properly then you will oviously be running a little lean. The only oil for that con rod bearing is in your fuel mixture coming in. If there was a lack of oil then that rod bearing could have starded for oil and seized.

That sucks man....just the amount of time it takes to tear it all down let alone the money. I feel for ya. There are always cases on ebay. Check your thermostat when doing the rebuild.
 
what lead up to this,how did you ride,over rev'en???? how many miles?,how does the piston look?,loose a skirt???,more pics of the piston.

does the crank turn?
 
Are there any major differencec in srx vs Viper cases? The reason why I ask is Viper king(i think) has a set of cases in the classifieds for $125. Yama all I can say is OUCH!! Good Luck in putting her back together. T
 
rich, that sucks man. its pretty sad, when the other riders on the trail can't help a guy out. so, it looks like you need some parts. well, i got what you need. i kinda owe you one already, so just pm me and we can work something out.

'98-'99 srx cases are a little different than '00-'02 srx and '02-'05 viper cases. rich needs a '98-'99 srx case.
 
Same thing happened to my friends 800 mack 1 Ski-Doo....It blew up riding on the lake and it made it about a mile running on just 2 cylinder shut it off saw it was BLOWN UP
got the trailer and it started AGAIN and he rode it up on the trailer....I couldn't believe it made it back,A then ran again...Amazing
 
ya they were yellow riders ....just wish i had something to throw at that jag off ...carbs were spotless looked them over again lastnight ....the piston looks great even the jug is good ...except were the rod hit them and trashed them ....was riding along at mabe 30 mph nothing different than normal .no over reving clutch was spot on ..ya the crank turns fine except yhe broke rod even the rod bearing is still good ..........here are some more pics ...................................there will be no rebuilding this motor ....i got 2 more sleds i can ride and a extre motor to put in this sled ..so it aint gonna ruin my season just my day .....i was ok til them guys pulled up telling me to get out of there way ...seeing my hood open and didnt even bother to ask if i was ok ...but what goes around comea around ....see if i ever help out someone in yellow ...

X2 on that Daman.. But glad to hear he has another motor to put in it.

Sell the good parts that are left from the motor that blew up. Get your money back from your bad weekend.
 
Is the piston stuck in the cylinder? I did that a few years back with a red head triple. I think it was a bad base gasket casing it run lean as heck.the rod cut through the cases and the cylinder.. The problem is they usually run awesome before ya get "premature headlight failure"..
