new to sleds, 1982 yamaha enticer

i just bought a 1982 yamaha enticer, when i went to pick it up buddy had it running great, one pull it would start, so i bought it, got it home and no start, will fire if you dump fuel in the plug hole, and if you do this enough time it will stay running and run great, dont know much about sleds, made sure fuel is getting to carb, even put in a new fuel filer, the guy i bought it off said the carb has been cleaned, bjut said something about the float may need to be adjusted, anyone know if the float could be the problem? or what else could be the problem?? getting discouraged here

Try installing a primer bulb in the fuel line, with the older machines I had always done this. Make sure the choke is functioning properly, you may need to adjust the choke cable due to it being stretched form old age. You can try this by just cover the carb with a your glove and pull it over to see if it improves. You may also need to rebuild the fuel pump.

sounds like a float problem to me as well. either that or one of the diaphrams in the pump is split. usually only happens after they have sat for a long period of time.

I hope this isn't a hijack... but, my 340 was doing the same thing. I cleaned the carbs very well and replaced pulse line. Seemed to fix the problem. Fired up easy, ran good, idle good. Then the kid ran through a tank of gas, didn't run out though. Filled up again (good no ethanol premium) and it began being hard starting again. Then start bogging/loading up at idle and dying and not wanting to start at all. Last year I had to use the oil overflow hose to syphon from tank to carbs many times to get it going again back in the boonies. Not sure what it is, just pulled it into the shop. And its funny, after sitting for a few days it fired up on third pull. When it died last week on the kid, I pulled and pulled and pulled and could not get it to fire but once, and it died.

I'll keep posting on this thread, sounds similar to kevinm1980's problem.
