Bad Fuel, Frozen line, TORS, Carbs???

I need a second opinion. My SRX is giving me a hard time the last two days and originally I though it was a frozen fuel line, but I've had it covered with a heat gun going all day with some gas line anti freeze in the tank and still no luck. It will fire up and run strong for about 10-20 sec and then it's all down hill from there. I just put fresh plugs in the other day (BR9ECS) and although old, the previous ones were in fairly good shape and coffee tan/dark colour. I've put on about 80 kms this season so at this point I don't think it's dirty carbs. Could it be the fuel filter's plugged???
 
If you have not cleaned the carbs this season...better do it.

Also, could be a frozen fuel pump. The 2001 SRX fuel pump had the vent hole in the bottom of the fuel pump[later Vipers did as well]. Those pumps sometimes build ice against the air side of the bottom diapram. No amount of deicer will help the situation as the ice is not on the fuel side, you have to heat the fuel pump or get it inside where its warm.

Check tank fuel filter as well + when you clean the carbs check each carbs fuel filters under the fuel inlet valves as well.
 
Just because the carbs were clean and you put 80km on, it doesn't mean there couldn't have been some kind of sediment in the bottom of the tank. It could have gotten sucked up into the fuel pump or carbs.
 
Take a hair dryer and warm up the fuel pump. I have even taken a hand warmer packet, got it warm and placed it on top of the pump. It works great, if no electricity is available. Probably bad gas(water). Soc

I have the sled covered with a heat gun going under the hood so I hope that loosens it up if that is the problem.
 
Thanks Sockeye, I'm gonna put the heat gun right to the pump and see if that works. I'll let ya know how that goes.
 
Hey good eve to you bluemonster,happy new year!Listen you didn't mention if you had an inline fuel filter or the original one in the tank! I put a new one in the tank,B***h to get at need a coat hanger to pull it up out of the neck.I also put a different one other than original,smaller and it had a check ball in it.So if you think you have water problems throw in one of those water eliminators from Royal Dis.or maybe someone local will have one,they are awesome.Also premium fuel does not have any ethanol in it so you shouldn't have water problems if you use that type of gas.
 
Blue. It's too damn cold out there to work on the beast tonight so I didn't get a chance to go KABOOM.
Kapusta. It's an OEM filter so it shouldn't be a issue. and I ALWAYS use premium gas.
 
our premium is ok kapusta..Happy New Year to you to.I have never changed the filter on my SRX,just the SXR.It was a challenge.
Cold here to netefrog.I just turned the heater up more in my garage...changed upper sprocket in my SXR tonite..toasty warm.....lol
 
A garage would be a luxury for me. I'm workin with a 20 below car port, it's like a garage with only one wall. Nice and toasty warm eh.....I'm jelous...LoL
 
hats off to you ...20 below and a car port .....whats the point just drag it out in the middle of the yard in the sun might be warmer .....
 
I don't know what time zone you guys are in but here the closest I'll get this time of day is a moon tan. LoL
 
What kind of "goes downhill from there" are you referring to?? Runs crappy? backfires? won't run at all?

Bad gas

sideshowBob is right, What kind of gas do you have over there? This thread freaked me out the other day http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=66867 . makes think more about the gas, if it was ok at one point. Might want to check out your tank. Just another thought. That crap will plug anything. YUK! If it was me I would pull the carbs. Been there, on the working in the cold. They come off quickly and inside you go. These carbs are notorious for plugged pilots as I'm sure you already know. When I suspect anything fuel related, carbs are the first check and are usually it. Hope this helps, Soc
