Tach cycles but dosn't work

My cousin just purchased a used 2003 700 srx and has a problem with the tach. The tach will cycle but not register when engine is running. He has looked and can't find the problem. Has any one here had this happen and if so what should he be looking at to fix this.
 
None that he's told me about. I havn't seen sled. He told me it was a 2003 but he's not big into yamahas, this being his first.
 
I'll call tonight and get as much info as I can from him. I'll post anything else, but he did say it ran fine in his yard. He did say it was a SRX 700 and not a SXR700. The guy that sold it to him told him it was a 2003. Any reason that the year may be wrong? I'll post as soon as I get more info.
