I'm pretty new to snomobiles, but not really new to engines. I'm planning on going with some buddies up to northern wi in a couple weeks and I'm just questioning what I need to look over on my sled to be ready for this. We'll probably put on between 500-1000mi during the trip.

I have a 2000 SRX 700. I cleaned the PVs, haven't touched the carbs yet because it seems to be running strong. It's dead even with my friend's 2002 Viper 700 w/ a Can and a rider who's 20lbs lighter. We only ran up to 90 or 100mph. Is that about right?

-So overall, I'm wondering what I should be looking at checking, inspecting, relacing, or taking along (extra parts and whatnot) for the upcoming trip.

-Does it sound like the sled is running at near full potential?

-The track has quite a few lugs missing on the outside of the clips, but only maybe one missing inside. I've put 400 miles on it so far. Is it reliable and o.k. to keep running that track? It also has 144 studs down the middle.

Thanks guys.

Clean the carbs first if you have't done this already for this season.Even if it seems to run strong. Better safe than sorry.
Bring extra plugs and a belt.
A well tuned SRX will beat a stock Viper ( even with a can ).
Whats your engagement rpms? Your top rpms?
Clean and inspect your clutches.
If you can post a pic of the track. Lugs missing is not the end of the world but tears in the track would be.
Make sure the skid is greased and check the wheels and sliders .

Check your wallet and make sure is is fat with cash for fuel, oil and food ;)!

Haha all good advice thanks!

I haven't looked to see the exact rpms for engagement- I believe it's close to 4400. Top rpm is 8600.

I'll see if I can get some pics of the track- damage appears to be only to the rubber lubs. I can see the woven material underneath, but that seems to be in good shape.

-What am I looking for when I check the wheels & sliders?

-When cleaning the clutches, is there anything special there that I need to watch out for so I don't mess them up? Never done it on a snowmobile before!

Thanks again man!

When checking the wheels make sure they spin nice when the track pressure is off of them. If you have a needle adapter for your grease gun shoot some grease in them.
Most sliders have a wear line on them. If you are at the line or past, replace them.
Primary clutch. Remove the cover. This is held in with six bolts. Carefull its spring loaded.Check the weights and rollers. Make sure everything moves freely. I take them apart and clean everythng with brake clean.
Secondary clutch. Before removing cover (helix) check the wrap. ie what holes are the spring tabs in. Remove the helix. Now you can clean the shafts and check the bushings, helix and the buttons. If the buttons are worn down close to metal then replace them. Make sure the ramps of the helix are clean and smooth.
While you have the secondary off check the jackshaft bearing. I remove the seal on the bearing with a small screwdriver. If its dry and rusty, replace it.
Also while you're in the area check the speedo side drive shaft bearing. Its directly below the seconday. Same thing applies. If its dry and rusty, replace it.

Check the tech sections here. I am sure there are better explanations for all these maintianence practices. These are things that I do pre-season and mid-season.
