My pull cord broke today and then after trying to fix it the spring broke..damn.
Can someone post a picture of what the pull cord looks like on their machine?
Mine had a spring over the cord between the pull handle and the assembly..weird. I think that spring actually wore the cord down till it broke.
Is this spring normal?
Thanks

Mine has a spring type thing that goes between the assembly and chaincase...I believe. I have sled in garage now and can check when I get home from work if you want. I just replaced the spring. Fun job...not! I bought a new one for $17.00 but people here were saying you can bend a new tab back and reuse the old one....if your tabs broke...mine did.

Thanks ya I will buy a new recoil spring and have someone else put it in!!
I want to know if I can leave that other spring off cause it doesn't look that good anyways

The spring covering the cord prevents the cord from rubbing on the sharp corners of the chaincase. If you leave off the guide spring your rope could chafe and wear through sooner.

I also wonder if this spring helps reduce excess heat on the cord from the exhaust.

I see
Does anyone know if that spring is attached to anything or does it just float there.

Mine (2002 sxr600) floats up and down between the recoil and a metal loop the rope goes through on the chain case.

Can someone still post a picture of the pull cord area on their sled??

Here are a couple. First is the cord routing over the chain case. Next is the recoil on the engine, or as best i can see it.

Speaking of which, can someone post a picture of the spring in place. I had mine for some reason fall out of the spool, nothing was broken though, I removed the coil to see if it was dead meat, but it was good. So recoiled it back up and put it back in. Cleaned everything and reassembled and it works, but I am just worried now since reading this that maybe the end did break a bit and that is why it fell out.

As for recoiling the spring up, here is a trick, use a 3 inch finishing nail. Nail it into a piece of wood, say a 2x8 or 2x10, leave some of it sticking up so you can hook the coil part that you would hook onto the housing onto the nail, and coil it up, you will have to use two hands here, not easy, but a lot safer then having it fly up, just take your time coiling it back, once you have it back, have a pair of vice grips handy and then lock the now tightened coil in place, very carefully now re-install it back into the housing. Just make sure you coil it up the proper way so when you go to put it in the housing, that it is going to sit in it proper, upside down will give you some grief and will more then likly end up with it flying apart again.

Thanks for the pictures
I am missing that gold coloured bracket...what is it?
Also, is the spring siliconed into the pull housing or does it move up and down on the pull cord?

The gold bracket holds up the coolant hose, and completes the "loop" that the cord goes through on top of the chain case. The spring on the cord is free floating.

I have had the the chaincase cover behind the gold bracket wear enough from the rope that the tab the bracket bolts to broke. It was on a 97SX with about 7400 miles on it. Had to get it welded back together. Don't know if it is quite the same on your model, but be sure to examine that area so if needed you can repair it before it wears too thin. They should have designed a plastic wear piece in that area. Also good advice to put locktite on recoil spool nut so it does not work loose. Here is a link to good advice for recoil replacement- http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=35188&highlight=recoil+spring Those recoil springs can be a bitch!!!

What size (diameter) of rope is used in Yamaha recoils (3/16", 7/32", or 1/4")? I'm pretty sure that spring that the rope runs through is simply there to protect the rope from the heat of the silencer. I do notice chafing though on my chaincase and I'm wondering if anyone out there found a neat trick to keep the chafing from tearing up my rope so fast. I've replaced the rope each of the last two years and now I have to replace it again. By the way, last time I broke the recoil spring but just bent a new tab on it with a pair of vice-grips and it worked great. I think I just need better rope that doesn't break so quickly but I'm open to any suggestions you guys may have!
