I just purchased an '02 SXviper 700 er. First time I turned it on the warning light flashed signaling a bad fuel sender. I checked connections and it was still connected so I figured the sender would need replaced but would do that after season. I then decided to take her out for the first time and the warning lights quit flashing but the speedometer stays at "0", the odometer stays at "965" and the fuel gauge bounces from full-empty-1/2 fulll-etc.. The tach works just fine. What do you think the problem is? Thanks
On my 02 ER if the battry was weak I would get similar symptoms. Try charging your battery with an Optimate or good quality trickle charger and see if that does it.

Have the battery load tested. Even if it looks like it took a charge from the charger, doesn't necessarily mean its ok.
mechanic said the wires that connect speedo and odometer are bad somewhere under the motor. Says he has to take entire motor out to find out where the problem is. I asked if he could just run a new wire harness and he said it would be more expensive. Does that sound right?
