no power no RPMs

00 sx 500. the sled just wont go. does not want to stay running without giving it gas. it wont engage until i have the throttle about half way to the bar. when driving it i cant seem to get it over about 6000 rpms. thats with the throttle all the way to the bar, and after about a 1/4 mile of working up to it. now i did notice a huge difference between my 600 and my 500. the 500's throttle is a bit sloppy (like about a 1/4 inch of play before it will start bringing the rpms up) whereas the 600 is nice and tight (rpm starts to climb as soon as you give it any gas). i did pull the carbs and clean the jets. drained all the old gas out and put fresh gas (with seafoam) in. any ideas why i cant get any power out of this sled?
 
not 100% sure if im down a cylinder or not. that was actually the first thing i thought might be wrong. i know it sounds very sickly. kinda like when my 600 gets all gummed up. thats why i was kind of hoping it would just need another carb and jet cleaning. how exactly do i check and see if i have a cylinder down?
 
Check the compression, You could remove the spark plug rotate engine so piston is on the bottom and look thru the plug hole and see how things look, What color are the plug? are they wet with fuel? Did you try new plugs? How many miles on the sled?
 
Put a set of brand new plugs in it and report back. I am confused on which carbs you cleaned, the 600 or the 500? Double check the pilot jets again "if" the plugs don't fix the problem.
 
to see if its running on all, while its running with plug pliers pull one wire off at a time and see if it makes a difference you should hear the difference or check the temp of all cylinders by the exhaust flange on front of jug it should be close just my 2 cents also throttle play on both sleds should be the same, make sure the carbs are clean and synced
 
i tried new plugs right away. the plugs i took out were of course pretty fouled out and wet. the new plugs didnt help. there are less than 1000 miles on the sled.

bandit... it was the 500 that i pulled the carbs on. cleaned em up real good.
 
ok so i think i figured out the problem. pulled the new plugs and the throttle side was nice and brown the brake side was still white and brand new. started looking at the slides and the break side would not open when i squeezed the throttle. i could manually open it with my finger whereas on the throttle side i could not. i dont know squat about how these things work but i am guessin that there is some sort of spring inside there that works with the throttle cable to open and close the slides. any advise?
 
If they are flatslides take the top of the carb off(on the one thats not opening) there are 2 screws that hold the slide. they must of come loose or someone left them loose when thay were ajusting the needles.
 
simple fix theres is a screw that holds the slide onto the fuel rail and it has backed itself off. you dont need to remove carbs to fix just unscrew the top plate of the carb your having trouble with and you ll see the screw im talkin about. Get some lock tite and re screw it in and you ll be good to go.
 
If you unscrew the black cap on top of the carb, there is a large phillips screw that attaches the slide assembly to the rotating rod that turns when you squeeze the throttle. If that is loose it wouldn't lift the slide. While you are in there you can check the 2 allen screws with a 2.5mm ball end. This you can do with everything still on the sled should take 5 minutes
 
got it all fixed up! all it was, was the screw that opens the slide fell out. screwed it back in and she purrs like a kitten again. thanks to all that responded! its great to have a site like this. thanks again!
 
LOL i wish my dumbass would have read this before i pulled it all apart. but then again thats how i discovered the slide was not opening. thanks again guys!
