SO ... Took over an 98 SRX700.
Current Symptoms:
1) Speedometer does not work
2) Pull Start Cable and Recoil works but does not engage engine
(Cannot run a compression test on any cylinder at this point)
3)Spark Plugs Threads have black colour

Have tried so far ....
1) Heating the starter cable coil with a hair dryer (Heard this stick some times and could help) Not working thus far...

I need some assistance here and would appreciate some next steps or any advice in order to get this back and running...

Thanks All in advance..

Take apart the recoil and see why it is not working, You may need a new one. Some came with a emergency rope that you wrap around the primary to start it, In the event the recoil breaks. Put in fresh NEW plugs, BR9ecs. Next take the speedo cable apart one is by the gauge and the other is under the secondary clutch, by your left foot, test cable by turning the inside cable if it turns your ok..then look at the key from the driveshaft to where the other end of speedo cable plugs in. Its probably broke. Check driveshaft bearing while your there.

So A little more background...

-Sled had Hauch Howlers... changed and put exhaust back to original
-Plugs were originally BR9ECS and I changed back to NEW BR10ECS (Yamaha Specs for Original Configuration)
This sled also is running on Shell Advance Synthetic for systems with Powervalves

Thanks for the reply DV8

As far as plugs go I would recommend BR9ECS. And as far as oil goes try using Amsoil Interceptor oil.

SO Oil was switched from Shell 2 Cycle to Synthetic last year... could this also be a source for problems...

All this crap you find out after taking over a sled...

No. I don't think that oil could cause any of the problems you're having. But to prevent powervalve pullthroughs and sticking in the future try the interceptor oil. And alot of guey black on the plugs tells me the engine is not running hot enough. 10 are too cold. br9ecs are what works in the SRX.

(Me Looking at the machine right now) Seems that the throttle cable is hanging on by 2 of 6 threads... If this needs replacing no issue, but from all of your extensive knowledge, does this cable also connect to the Oil Injection as well or is this a stand alone throttle cable...?

A second on the BR9ECS plugs. The "C" is for copper core which run cooler and avoid detonation at WOT heavy load. Run premium or octane boost also.

The "C" designates LOW ANGLE GROUND ELECTRODE and "E" is 19MM THREAD REACH, "C" is LOW ANGLE GROUND ELECTRODE, and "S" is STANDARD 2.5mm CENTER ELECTRODE. Drop the "C" and the difference is the electrode. The ECS series is used in the high performance models and has a stronger >ground electrode designed to withstand vibration etc.

Plug will work just fine br9 ecs. If your fowling plugs the something else is off, jetting, or compression or reeds...or a bad exhaust can.

you will be fine running shell advance syn., it's also a good quality oil. i have been using that oil in my 98 for the last 22000km with no issues. Your power valves will have to be pulled out and checked, that goes with any type of oil you run throw it. recoil is easy enough to remove, take pipes off, remove the 2 bolts that hold part of the front brace/support bracket (14mm heads i believe) and you should be able to undo the bolts on the recoil and remove it. I also agree with the above on the BR9's as well. good luck ;)!

Thanks... for all the replies... I am taking notes.. as I go here... Keep the tips coming please... as I am a newbie on this sled.. and value your advice and opinions...

this doesn't have to do with your immediate problem but since the sled is new to you i'd look into these things as well:
clean carbs
clean and adjust powervalves
check the rest of the driveline bearings
clean out and change chaincase fluid
check ty tech, info for most this stuff is there, as well as search the forums, and ask any more specific ?s you have
good luck and welcome to TY
