I was just wondering if anyone has had a clutch get extremly pitted to a point where you can stand over it and see it clearly, the mechanic said to get a new primary but someone mentioned that they could lathe it for me, the mechinc said you could do that but it would coast as much to have that done as getting a new primary inless someone can do it for you. My question is what would cause the primary to be so pitted when it has 1200 miles on it? It was in some bad accidents where he broke a trailing arm, bent a a-arm and where the trailing arm connects by where your feet go their is a indent where he had to re-attach the trailing arm? any ideas on what would cause this/if lathing the primary out will make it run good again? thanks, Luke...I love TY!

I dont see how any of the accidents mentioned effect the clutch in getting pitted... i never heard of lathing the clutch but i know you can get some used ones on here for pretty cheap! id prob find one on here before buying a new one.. already did that mistake once in getting a brand new comet clutch and could of payed 1/4 of the price for one that was still good.. but used... if you got the funds them by all means might as well go new... but yea..as for lathing... some 1 else will have to chim in

I would buy used. unless the money is there for a new one. scrap that lathe idea. that would b a pretty trick set up on a lathe. unless u trust the guy and know hes done it before u.

plus the sheave will be thinner and probably crack or grenade
I have turned front and rear clutches on the lathe before, but that as for race sled's looking to lighten and true the faces. Its more of a pain in the *** than its worth on a trail sled tho, whats a good used primary go for? 150?

I found them on ebay for around 250 used, I don't have the funds for a new one, so lathing is a bad idea im guessing saftly wise?

clutch is fixed. the pitting is still their but the guy said that didn't matter and did something to a part next to it and now engages and takes off at normal rpm's

not sure why it would be pitted unless the other owner use to tow it without a cover and the salt has ate away at it, or it was stored with the belt still on it for a long period of time.
now they do get stress cracks which you have to check on.
i agree, do not buy a comet clutch, you will regret it, buy a good used one.
