Trying to get the Bogs out of 1994 VMAX 500. Bought it used for my son, but suspect the previous owner has modified something in the clutch or carbs. Starts up first pull, idles great, runs great over 45. The problem is between 25 -45(comfortable trail speed) it falls on it's face, no power, boggy amd lucky to get 5mpg. Cleaned carbs, replaced main and low jets(factory) checked floats. Clutch weights are springs are correct and in good condition. Secondary spring is in proper position. Don't know where to look from here. I'm afraid the dealer wouldn't see the problem because it appears to run fine on the jack! The compression is about 90 is that within range?

OK, but what is wot rpm??
I used to have a 95 Vmax just like this 94 and never experienced anything like this. Since I have gone through the carbs , I am leaning towards clutching.
Thanks

wot is Wide Open Throttle, also good to know for the clutching guru's is the color of the small paint spots on both your clutch springs(if you can see them)

Plugs seem rich to me, pretty black. Fuel screws are back off about 1 1/4 trns. Needles are set at the middle of the 5 clip positions with 1 washer underneath. Main jet is 151.3 and the pilot is 45.
Although the belt is newer, I will check the position when I go up again. The same goes for the wot and engagement rpm.
Thanks for all the advice.
I'll follow up with the findings,
Bill

have you blown out the clutches with compressed air yet? might need a rebuild in the primary clutch but it might just be sticking from belt dust in the clutches. need to use 120psi+ to get the dust out.

Your compression is really low. It should be around 121 PSI. I had three 94-95 V-max 500's and they were all at 121 PSI. Maybe try a different gauge to be sure.

I thought that was kind of low myself, but had nothing to compare iut to except a triple 600. Would that cause it to start good, run great over 45 abd boggy at trail speed?
Thanks
