Belt squeal at idle

After the sled is warmed up and I've ridden for a while the belt squeals when sitting at an idle. I checked the idle setting and it seems fine. I've had two vipers since they came out in 02 and they have both done this. I guess I should have addressed the issue before now.....Thoughts?
 
Check The Belt For Spec Make Sure Its Good And Then You Will Have To Check The Secondary Clutch End Play And Adjust Shims Accordingly. My 02 Was Doing The Same Thing This Weekend I Had To Remove 2 Shims And It Solved The Problem.
 
I don't know what you mean by endplay. Do you mean rideheight? Where do you remove the shims and how do you know how many?
 
did you just put on a new belt? You can adjust your secondary belt difflection by adding or removing washers on the 3 8mm head bolts on the back of your secondary clutch....

Adding washers gets rid of belt difflection

If its squeeling, it is too tight so remove washers..

Exactly.

I put a new belt on my venture last winter. it squealed afterwards and the washers were in the clutch. I took the secondary off, took the washers out, and it is perfect again. Keep the washers for use when the belt gets worn, but at that time you probably need a new belt again. Supposedly yamaha made the new belts wider last year than they used to be.

Someone else just posted on the same topic, and daman posted a nice pic of the secondary and what needs to be done. It is very easy.

a little squeel at itle is common, especially if someone has played with the clutches to get max speed out of them. tight belt is a fast belt. ive never had any problems with it eating belts on me either. last just as long as any others will. i guess if you arent woried about that little speed in a drag race then might be worth changing just so you dont have the squeel annoying you if you let it set at itle for a minute. if the noise dont bother you i would leave it.
 
All mine squeel this year, new belts. I just leave them as is. They break in with time and the squeel goes away. I should just do the washer thing but!!!
 
i removed the 3 washers at the back of the secondary when i put the new belt on, no squeel, rode it for about 1000 miles with them out, figured it was enough time for the belt to be broken in, belt started slipping so i put them back in and now everything is fine... I sometimes get a little squeel at idle for doesn't stay for long...
 
I bought some thinner (than stock) washers so that I can put them back in when the belt starts to wear, but isn't warn enough to install the stock washers.
 
How many washers should be back there? Is one washer enough to take out, I think that is all that is in there by looking at it.
 
u got 2 add two washers!!.take out 1 it will squeel even more!the belt is too tight.the more washers put in the looser the belt comes .just add 1 to youre 1/.
 
I believe you are wrong there, if you remove washer, the bolt extends further and the clutch opens up more, stopping the belt squeal

Correct.

Removing the washers gives more room for the belt, not the other way around as the previous poster thought. I know it sounds weird, but that is how it is.
 
WOOO Woo,, need to add washers for worn belt,,,,,,, remove for new..... Adding washers will bring clutch surfaces closer together... thous tightening for worn (narrowed) belt...
