Well after doing alot of reading here and getting alot of suggestions I have narrowed my search to the above sleds.
I have my eye on a 2001 Vmax(w/reverse and elec start) with low mileage for around 2500..
OR
Should I continue to search for a slightly higher mileage SXR 700 and hopefully get that for around 1900-2100..
Any thoughts on which way to go.. Are the sleds really that different??
I was also considering a Viper...man they hold their value..

i'd be definitly looking for an srx not a sxr but it's up to you the srx is a race sled and the sxr is a trail sled i prefer power and speed over comfort any day
I agree taht iam giving up the power with not looking at the SRX, but I dont get the chance to get out on any lakes..
most of my riding will be trails, thays why I have been searching for either the vmax or SXR.
I just dont really see the difference in the two/

If you plan on trail riding and not lake racing, the SXR is the way to go. I will garrantee you will be able to out perform the SRX in every instance of riding except for drag racing and lake racing, Add a Boss seat and you are ready to go. No power valves to screw with either. Price for a good low milage 700 SXR can be had now for around 2k the SRX is deffinatly cheaper at the wholsale auctions, why, nobody want the slug. I am sure some have other opinions but for milage, trail performance, and outright reliability, you can not beat the 700 SXR. Al

thanks for your input. That helps alot especially since your own(or have owned) the exact three sleds I am looking at.
Is there a big difference between the vamax 600 and the SXR and viper??
Idont mean just power but overall.

Pick up a Viper. They may be a little more than your price range but you will have the power you need on the lakes and the suspension you need for the trails.

I have a 2000 SXR 700 and a 98 SRX. Both sleds preform great, but the SRX has quite a bit more punch than the SXR. I have heard the SXR has great life expectancy out of the engines. I like both sleds, if you put in a different skid into the SRX you will have an even better sled. Or do what stein says and get a Viper if you want the extra comfort with the extra power. Sorry I know nothing and have never ridden a vmax.
YES comfort sounds good...I am just getting back into snowmobiling after a 12 yr lay off. My last sled as a 78 Exciter....So basically I am used to (not liking it tho) having NO suspension. So a comfy ride sounds good to me..

- Funny...I'm just getting back into it after a 13 year hiatus. I had an '95 VMAX 500 and now I got the '01 700SXR.
- To me it's a huge difference.
- I'm actually going to be shopping for an Apex, Vector, or Attack in the Spring.
I should also add that my passenger will be my 5yr old son quite a bit, thats the reason I was staying away from the power vlavled motors, I thought they would be to torquey.
I would go for a 700 triple SXR. Same suspension as a Viper, no power valves to constantly clean. The 700 is better on fuel than the 600 triple also. At the fuel stops the 700 SXR always gets better milage than either the 700 VIper or 600 SX. I have all three of these sleds. I much prefer to ride the SXR. The Viper is smooth but doesn't corner near as well as the SXR, different type of ski's. The 600 is very smooth but does not have as much take off power, and uses more fuel, different gear ratio's for 600's. If I had a choice I would buy another SXR 700 and not a Viper. I do like the looks of the Viper but the constant cleaning of the power valves is a big disappointment to me. Do yourself a favor and buy a 2001 SXR 700 and reclutch using TURKS specs. Add a BOSS seat, you will out ride and feel more comfortable doing it, than on a 600 Vmax or Viper or SRX. Al

thanks for sticking with me in this thread. I appreciate the real
world seat of the pants opinion on the two sleds. And since you
own both I was hoping to hear your opinion.

Look at a Venture 700. 2nd up seat for your son and you. I've been told they ride like a "sofa".
Viper = best of both worlds power and comfort. Power valves are easy to clean.
Z06, I know power valves are easy to clean, but why go for a machine which does not offer any better trail speed performance and every 500 miles you have to clean, or use special oil. I own both types power valve and non power valve. Why would Yamaha build a machine which cannot run more than 500 to 700 miles without cleaning the valves, rediculas. I am now having to unload the Viper and set on the stand in the shop and dissassmble the valves to clean after every long weekend. Alot more problems with the power valve engines than the dependable red heads. If the original poster is interested look into a 700 sx dlx 2001, these have electric start and reverse. Not really a two up but would work for your needs. The shocks are standard hydrolic and the springs are on the soft side, not really the fastest sled but very dependable and comfortable. Al
2001 vmax should have dual headlight compared to 2000 SXr.same sled different shocks but the dual headlight is a must
nothing can touch an SXr in the trails.....Nothing! It is by far the best trail sled in the tight and twisties ever made ..Period!

In that case I should hire a good rider to ride mine so I can see how good it really is.

As to the original poster, I can only say I have been very happy (after a small clutch problem was solved) with my 02 SXR 600. I am close to 60 and fat but can stay with a slim 21 year old on a 600 triple cat through the turns and straights...for a little while that is until I get tired.

Get a SXR700, no PV's to mess with, and you can put an EDGE or Pro/X skid and have a great ride.. I bought one this year, and put a Pro/X skid and everyone that rides it falls in love with it.. I also put bender pipes and electric start so that helps. (I beat a Fusion 900 3X in a row this weekend) Point is, get a good base sled and make it what you want. I got the SXR because of weight, and price before "tweaking". Just my thoughts.
EDGE or Pro/X skid
how much do the new skids cost?
I found 2 sleds close by, 1) 2000 sxr 700 with 2900 mi, track is looking lime it needs replacing---guy wants 2k
the other is a 2002 600 sxr with ony1750 mi for 2200
decisions....
