We're putting a different track on anyway, so he'll pull the cover and make sure everything is ok inside.
I have seen that a few times on many brands of sleds. it is usually due to someone forgetting to set the lock nut.
I got free beer all weekend from one rider in our group that thought he had severe drivetrain issues. I fixed it on the trail and we wasted only about 10 minutes of riding time.
If you are putting a different track in at some point, you might as well put new driveshaft bearings in it when you do that.

See i told ya, take your time and see whats wrong first. If your not sure that bolt is hand tight then back off a 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Then like horkn said replace those bearings while its apart!! Glad it was a easy fix!!

So am I! I'm going with a track from an RX1, 96 studs (probably Mack 1.075's with square aluminum backers), and replacing hyfax and limiting straps. I will go ahead and replace the driveshaft bearings also. Anything else I should do while we're at it?
We also have to figure out why the speedometer doesn't work- my friend said the little piece that feeds the speedo cable often breaks, so I am hoping it's something easy. We'll figure that out when it gets pulled apart.

Maybe check all your wheel bearings and i think you got it. Not sure on the speedo on your year sled but if i remember your buddy is talking about whats called the speedo key??? Good luck and pray for cold weather and snow. I could wear a T shirt out around here today.

Oh I know...I replaced the battery in my motorcycle earlier and actually thought about going for a ride. If it wasn't for the salt on the roads, I probably would!
just did my drive shaft on 98 srx 700 it's just a 1" common bearing. don't get one from the dealer they will charge you upto 40 bucks for one i bought mine at a machine shop for only 3 dollars also have fun getting the bearing out it's a royal pain in the butt

Good to know, thanks.
I can get a Yamaha track with a few hundred miles on it (1") for $100 from a friend, or a 121x15 1.25" Ripsaw for $300 (less than 500mi) on Craigslist. Which would you go for, and would the 1.25 fit with studs?
Edit: A bit of searching answered that question - 1" studded or 1.25" without. I think I'll go with the 1" and 96 studs up the middle..mostly trail riding, occasional powder (if we ever get any) and a bit of lake stuff (so I really want studs).

You will be fine with a 1" track and studs. I forget what lug height is on that sled, but IIRC, my 97 venture600 had a .75" track and it was horrible. It may have been a .5" lug track,. Either way it was horrible. I got a used .96 skidoo camoplast track for like 25 dollars on ebay. I got studs from TY vendor and it has been great, once i got the SRX USI skis on it witht he shaper carbides.
I was in the same quandary last winter and went with the 1" with studs.
Yes, check the idler bearings on the skid, and I bet the speedo cable broke. Easy fix, but it can be a few dollars.

The speedo key is broken. Awaiting parts now..supposed to be in the 40's and rain on Monday, so there's no riding to be done until we get a lot more snow. We don't have much as-is...it's going to be much worse later this week.
gotta watch what you get for the 3 dollars i almost made the mistake of buying til i opened it and seen it was NOT a high speed bearing ...and the lock collar was just a bit longer ....so OEM it was for me
