more newbie questions

Hi Everybody,

I posted last season about a low end bog I was getting. I was going to take the sled in before this season to get the carbs and power valves cleaned and set, but thanks to the economic downturn, my finances aren't what they were. At this point, I'm not so confident I can do it myself. I filled the sled with gas and added stabilizer at the end of last season. It started up fairly easy this season and after burning 1/2 tank of gas I topped it up with premium and it has been running very well (except I think I still have some wiring harness issues, thanks to those that helped me fix most of it last season) I even held my own dragging a couple of 800's in powder.

Now, I know that I should clean the carbs and power valves every season, but.....it's running very well and I don't have the money right now to take it in or any friends that are familiar with power valves. Just wondering what the "typical" symptoms of bad power valves are? I do want to get them cleaned up before my neglect causes any damage. I'd also like to know what to expect when a belt starts to wear down. I bought a new Dayco HPX belt that was $30 cheaper than the OEM 8DN, but after doing some reading on here, I decided that it wasn't worth it and bought one from the dealership today. Guess I'll keep the Dayco as a spare. I will not order another thing without researching it here first!

As I reread this, all I can think is that trying to save money not cleaning the carbs and power valves even though it is running good is going to cost me more.
 
You can do it here are some links to carbs first is how to take them apart and the second is how to clean them...all you need is a couple screw drivers and a set of pliers to take off the hoses that go to them!!! With all the burn downs from dirty carbs this should be done at the beginning of the season religiously!

As far as powervalves go you need a 4mm allen wrench a screwdriver and 2-2.5mm allen wrenches to set them. And a magic marker to mark your servo motor. Here is a link on how to set them. I do mine every 500 to 1000 miles but I run yamalube which has more carbon buildup than synthetic oils. I still have had a couple pull throughs on them. It is worth checking!!!!!!

Do you have a service manual? There are a number of people that do and all you have to do is ask. What sled do you have and what year?

All this stuff can be found in the tech section, or by using the search feature!!!! Good luck and it doesn't hurt to ask....it is the only way to learn!!!!!!!!!!!

oh as far as belts go....you did the right thing. Everyone has there opinion, but I like OEM belts!!!
 
lol, sorry, got carried away. I have a 2002 Yamaha Viper SX 700. I bought a Clymers viper 700 manual, but I think I got the wrong one because it has nothing about power valves in it. If anybody has it in PDF I would appreciate a copy. dice_jay@hotmail.com
