I have recently run across an rather strange problem with the sliding sheave on a buds primary on his 00 SX-R 700,the spider is tight on the bushing to the point it has to be forced apart.The spring was broken when I pulled the cover off and the whole thing was in dire need of a cleaning which is what I figured was the cause of the broken spring.What I found once I got the spider separated from the sheave was aftermarket parts inside,the slider pucks and bushing so I figured the bushing was wore and a new one would be the cure as well as Yamaha slider pucks.Well got a new Yamaha bushing pressed in and went to put the clutch together tonight only to find that the spider wont go through the new bushing at all,it's like the sheave has expanded somehow.I am thinking of suggesting to my bud to take the spider to a local machine shop and have the shaft that rides through the bushing polished down so it will slide easily in the new bushing.I don't know what else to do other than tell him to get a new sliding sheave but I doubt he will go for that.Other than being tight on the spider there doesn't appear to be any other damage,it's not cracked or out of round from what I can tell by eye.
I have tried the spider in an old sheave I had lying around and it slides as smooth as you'd expect it to so I know it's the other sheave that is at fault and the spider is as clean as I can possibly get it.
