I've got a 97 vmax sx 700 and was trying to find out what these sleds usually rev at. It seems mine revs around 8500 below 60mph and when I hold it wide open for a decent amount of time it seems to rev round 8800-8900rpm (kinda hard to see it that well when I'm accelerating WOT). Anyways I was just checking to see if this is normal for these sleds and right around 60mph it seems to rev at 7200rpm cruising. If someone can let me know if this is normal I'd appreciate it.
 
I just put one on 300 miles ago. It is a goodyear belt so I may buy a yamaha belt and see if that makes any difference.
 
97 sx's were design to run a softer compound belt. If your runnin an 8-dn youll have to put heavier rivots in the swing arms of your clutch to bring the r's down to 8300 to 8500 rpm

I got it at canadian tire and they looked it up so whatever it called for they sold me. I only noticed the revs going a little higher the last time I was out. The first 200miles or so it seemed to rev around 8500rpm. Just the last trip out it seemed to be going higher but I may be getting more used to the sled and opening it up further. The sled revs at ~7500rpm at ~70mph.
 
Now that I thought about it, when I got the carbs done the guy took it for a drive and he told me it reved to 8800rpm. I may go look into a yamaha belt,the belt may be causing me the issue. Rain is in the forecast so I'll have some time to get the belt for the next snow.
 
Yup, I bought a new style as Yammy calls it belt and the difference was night and day on my 98. Belt never over heats, even in the powder where I turn into the trail snow plow lol
 
Picked up a 8ND belt today. It was $100 but only $40 more than the goodyear and this belt feels much stronger. They had originally tried to sell me a yamaha belt that cost $80 but it was a different letter, I think it was an L and I told him that people recommended the 8D and he looked it up and the 8D was what it called for. The "L" one he gave me looked the same as the goodyear one I have now and the dealer guy said the L works well on 500's but the 8D is better for bigger motors. I'm gonna install it and break it in in a few days (its going up to +6 and rain tomorrow), hopefully it will make a difference, I think it will. I went for a quick spin this morning and she was hanging pretty solid on 9000rpm which it never did before. I am pretty sure the belt just isn't strong enough. I'll wait and see if the yamaha belt makes a difference. I'll use the goodyear as a spare.
 
9000? That's not breaking it in properly,,, did you give it a good bath before you installed? Belt needs to be broken in at variety speeds and rpms for at least 25 miles to get a good life span out of it......
 
I think he was saying it was hanging at 9000 with the old belt, not the new one. He said he was going to install the new one in a couple of days.
 
Yeah, the old belt was around 9000. I have the new one installed but its +10 here today and we got rain and there is no snow left. I'll have to wait a while to get it out to see if the new belt helped. They do have kimpex belts for $38 at the yamaha dealer which I thought was a good price for a spare belt. Anyways, hopefully it brings the revs down a bit. The first belt I had on the sled appeared to be the 8DN belt and it reved a little lower but it blew on my first trip. If it still revs high guess I'll have to adjust how hard I push the throttle until I can get it looked at.
