was out in steam boat haveing a good day there she want. even got in video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q79YD_A0tAw

i did get tore down yetersday. bearing want out on the middle rod not a good deal, but some how didnt hurt a cylinder or the head, but but nice little crack in the case. now i got a little project . so if any got parts pm please
 
i used just about half tank of oil. oil wasnt the problem the bearing just a got tired and she got 2700 miles on it
 
a yamaha rod bearing won't get tired within 2700 miles, with engine running 8500-9500 rpm. sorry to say it, but its real common for center rod bearing to go out on a viper. yamahas setting is too lean IMO.

i agree with mopar all the way,2700 is nothing you had other issues,poor off season storage.
 
hey you guys are saying vipers are set too lean? What have you been doing for that, and I should ask daman how do u winterize your sleds

fog fog fog and fog some more for off season storage.

vipers were set lean from factory,yamaha had them set up like that,I've seen it many times over the years being a member here,guys stating there vipes only using 80,90-100:1,good at first but as the years go by you start hearing of this stuff,time is taking it's toll on these cranks as miles pile up adding mods,detonation all puts strain on cranks then along with the lean mix and bad storage,problems show

solution; simple, see where your at for ratio then adjust pump accordingly. and fog in the off season. ;)!

hate to tell u guys i do fog the sled over every year since i have owned it so that not what caused it and it was a the center hole. its not a big deal its just a set back this year riding
 
I watched and listened to your video and your sled already sounded hurt at the start before you started up the embankment. Unless my ears decieved me. Also it seems as your sled turns alot of rpm, meaning that it sounds like it is over-revving. In my opinion it seems as this may help lead to the cause.

For some reason there is a charictaristic that ALOT of vipers are dropping the center cylinder or the center cylinders are going out.

I think what the guys are trying to say with the term "running lean" is that it seems that the oil pumps are set to not send enough oil to the fuel pump to lubricate the motor properly and the motor isn't getting necissarily enough oil for lubrication and over time this causes issues with the internal parts of the motor especially the center cylinder. this could have been dealer driven to turn down the pumps as there may have been an issue with to much smoke or excessive oil consumtion. Just a thought on the last portion....

i was wondering if it was over running the rpms never was really pay much to its been set there since day one might need to check the clutch to
 
I'm no expert, but to me it sounded like it was over reving. That is/was a common issue with the Vipers, No???
 
First thing I said to myself when video started was that it sounded bad. I'm not an expert either but I'd say it was running bad for awhile. I use one qt of oil per tank of gas?

I did hear that some people were having over rev problems from the factory. Also food for thought as your belt wears it also changes the gear ratio and could cause an over-rev situation or dramatically add to the over rev situation.
NOT PICKING ON YOU - But this is why it is wise to pay attention to the gauges, and listen to the pitch of the motor. These sleds are not as bullet proof as they once were MANY MANY years ago, with the (lets call it) new age they are running leaner fuel and oil mixtures along with pushing the performance envelope and there is ALOT less room for any type of error adn we are startign to see more catastraphic failures.

Ya that didn't sound right from the get go.. sled wasn't even coming close to obtaining speed as rpms would indicate..... It was all ready gone.........
 
i am not hearing what u guys hear on the video sounds the same to me. i know for the fact that the rpms werent over 9000 it was at like 8700 to 8900 most of the day but wasnt looking when i was riding at the end of the day i think the cam was putting the noise on the video i think your hhearing.
 
watched some other video and strating to here that noise but i was use a different cam to not sure.
 
well i have a 02 with 6200 on it i put benders oil injection kit on it never had a pro. till this year it over heated because of therm.
