Any theories on why the Vipers have a tendancy to "lose" the centre crankshaft rod bearings and the SRXs don't seem to have the same issues?

i always wanted to figure this out myself. there has to be a real good reason. also, i don't believe in the improper fogging that everybody says, as being the issue, as it wouldn't always be the same rod (center in this case) if that was the case. something is going on w/that center cylinder area on viper engines.

Bob the srx and vipers use the same bearings,so if there was a problem you'd see it with srx's also.sideshowBob said:Any theories on why the Vipers have a tendancy to "lose" the centre crankshaft rod bearings and the SRXs don't seem to have the same issues?
the main problem here is....
1-poor off season storage causing rust in the crank bearings by not fogging!!!
2-too lean of oil pump settings
crank seals will be a problem waay before a bearing issue if the above conditions are met.
i see it every year here......

what are the differences between the srx motor and the viper motor?,cases(castings, oil passeges),cranks(phazed different),timing, whats different?

im sure daman willl have the right answer but I always got the vibe that there isnt any different between the two. just a matter of different chassis, then the srx has stock pipes and some other mods where the viper is just a stock version. but im not entirely positive...

I should clarify on my above post 2000 to 2002 SRXs and vipers are the same, the 98-99 was different.
98 to 99 srx cranks had a 2 pice crank bearing on the clutch side. The viper has a one piece the same as the srx cranks from 2000 to 2002.
guys you can search all this info it's all here.

didn't the vipers have some twisted rod problems for a while? I know of two vipers that had a slight twist in the rod causing problems.

that was 98 and 99 srx 6-700s

Are you thinking of crank phasing, I know of 2 vipers that had twisted rods from the factory, both took out the mag side piston & cyl. at 700 miles then at 1400 miles. Both machines were found to have a slight twist in the rod beam. Just throwing that out there as a possible cause on other machines. If you have a viper that goes down for no appearant reason I would be looking into the rods.

does the SRX have staggered compression like the Viper?

I always wondered if it was because the viper runs hotter with a solid head and no rear exchanger, more heat and friction. any thoughts
Maybe It´s about the crankshaft balance. The srx have full circle counterwe ights and the viper hasn´t.
I know of three viper cranks that went on stockers because of no oil to one cylinder, two of them were mag side, two were spicket came out of base. I have one here that I havent pulled the motor yet but I can guess that is what happened. all the bearings burn dry as well as cylinder and piston. Also this leans out that cylinder and will start to burn piston a little before it sticks the motor.
I have a base and crank for a viper for sale if anyone is in need.

srx's have same compression on all 3 cylinders.
Hopefully I don't learn the answer to this "the hard way."
I am running a New Viper crankshaft in my 2002 SRX right now, the original SRX crankshaft was still operating, with no apparent bearing issues when I removed it during my off season rebuild. I was using Klotz at about a 50:1 pump setting the whole time, I am currently using RedLine with the same pump setting.
LOL!
We should know in a year or two!

Vipers don't have same compression on all three cylinders. I have heard from a mechanic at the yamaha near me that shaving the heads to make equal compression makes the viper engine bullet proof. How can varied compression cause rod bearing failure?

well that sounds like the problem with different compression all cylinders are not working the same rate and then add poor fuel motor pulses could put more stress on that bearing, and not having the full counter weight would not help either
