hey guys... did a motor rebuild on my viper and have the motor back in.... started adding cooland and noticed coolant leaking below the water pump so i tore it down and got little mirror out and noticed coolant was coming from looked like lower crankcase housing weep hole. its definatly coming from behind the water pump on lower side of case.
am i in for bad news as far as water pump seal is junk or is crankcase house junk. was hoping someone could give me some insight. thanks

Did you replace the w/p seals during the rebuild?? did you be sure to put the washer with the seal on the impeller bolt?. either way have to disassemble & inspect.

did not replace the seal. will i have to remove the motor? again? do you think coolant would have made it into the crank area?

I just did a waterpump rebuild on my viper and did not remove the motor.
If its coming out the weep hole it should not have made it into the crank area. Ive got an extra set of all the parts: Impeller, seals, rubber washer and o ring gasket if your interested email me at chris_kampen@mchsi.com

If there is coolant coming out of the weep hole under the engine, it could be due to a leaking impeller seal or it could be the rubber seal washer failed which is under the bolt holding the impeller onto the shaft. I ahve been told that it is improtant to put some low strength thread locker on the impeller splines. This prevents the impeller from wobbling around on the shaft which will wear out the rubber coated seal washer. These seals washer are known to fail. There is an oil seal on the impeller shaft which will keep the coolant out of the crankcase. The weep hole allows the coolant to escape so pressure does not build up on the crankcase oil seal. You might want to remove the water pump impeller cover, remove the rubber coated washer seal from under the impeller bolt, replace it with a new one, reassemble then seee if the leak has stopped. I beleive you cannot reuse the rubber coated seal washer.

I just did mine on my SRX with the engine in. It's a pain to get old mechanical seal out but easy enough to press back into place using a socket or bushing and impeller bolt. I used green loctite (cylindrical loctite) on the splines. so far so good.
