Snowplow Vmax 700 Suspension ???

Ok, this is starting to get unreal, I have never owned a sled so low in my life, I understand this is a lake racer and trail sled, but is there no way to get the front up a few inches? I hate to give up my over priced Ohlins shocks.

And how to these guys with the Mountian Max handle the powder with these sleds? Must be a trick here I am missing?

Here is a crappy BB pic, but look at the old 98 cat beside me, he is not plowing and we were all the same depth of snow.


Ideas with keeping my Ohlins would be great.

its the nature of the beast....not good in heavy wet snow....not good at all.but get it in the trails and leave your buddy's behind!
 
Have another question I may as well put in this thread.
After the heavy wet snow as you can see and we only managed 50 miles on the gps, probably tripple that though , or at least for me spinning in the wet crap. But I had tightened my Camoplast track last week, I checked the rear wheels and they seem ok, no wear, the red plastic on one is a tad cracked but that is just cosmetic ( I think ) Runner on them is top shape.

Now the track all of a sudden on the one side is every 8 - 12 inches starting to skin it self. Is the Wheel maybe wobbling and heating up the track and causing premature wear? Or is the track to tight on that side.

If I lift it up, I still have 3/4 inch and can pull a lot more down on the track. Now I had more before and my track was slipping. The track is only on its second season as well, so not rotted, no other spots are failing or cracking. Front two wheels are solid as well.
 
I love my sxr 700 in the deep. floats great. let out the front limiter 100%. loosen up the transfer rods 100% lean back and have fun. I am usually out front or the Viper 136 is. either one breaks trail great.

i have a sx i put new set of skies on and OMG world of a diffrence floats a lot better put a 1.5 track on and you wont plow at all
 
what i did was grind the lower shock mount off and cut a slit with the disc grinder 1.5" down from the top of the mount. then heated it up and bent it at a 45 degree angle, flipped them upside down, welded them back on and reinforced them with 1/8" steel band. It sounds more complicated then it is. but its one of the best things ive done to my sled. huge difference!!
 
Adjustable transfer rods and let the strap out 1 hole with some decent skis along with a decent 1" track unless no studs then you can stuff a 1.250 under it... Also sounds like yer track needs to be s adjusted at least loosened on one side or tighten on the outher to center it and I always run em looser than the oem specs...

I agree, wider skis will held you stay on top and make a big difference without going to longer shocks and changing the front end geometry(not that I am against that, just maybe start with the simplest options first).
Are you sure your track wasn't ratcheting from worn drivers?

No idea about the track, i just made a visual inspection after the ride. Everything SEEMED to check out. I will try to back off the one side that is wearing through, as I am guessing it is too tight.

As for Skis, I'd love to get some powder skis but out here we do not always have powder, just this year has been very odd with the mild temps, thus I have my trail skis on.

I also run a 1.25 track, so I already have the bigger track but no studs.

The thing I hate about this plow affect it the amount of snow that comes flying over the hood at me. I would hate to have my helmet open as it comes in huge clumps, and when you are trying to corner it in the powder, wet or dry ( not that it is dry ) it still comes flying up. My buddies Wife has a little 600 XTC, 97 and has the same issue with the snow blinding her. And she doesn't ride like me.

As for the Orange Kitty Cat, he has a ext track, 196 studs and a 1.25 lugs, so he rarely gets bogged down and when he does the studs usually dig in , hit ground and he shoots out like a rocket. I usually make the mistake and follow him as he knows all the back wood trails, but I forget his and my sled are two different breeds.

But the track is my formost thing to fix now, I personaly do not want to replace it ( again )

Like to see some pictures of the extension the one guy made up. I am going to check out the front ones, least then I can just put them on when in the deep stuff and take them off when on the trail.

I know I can go put on Viper front and back and raise it up but ..........then I may as well buy a Viper lol

I was just researching these, anyone ever use them, according to the site it is suppose to improve the sled all around, it is only 1 inch, but an inch is an inch.

As for the other fellow talking about my limiter straps, mine are all the way out already :( The only thing left is to actually remove them lol.
 
there was a set of take-off yamaha mountain over on the 4 stroke side last week. they handle good on the trail and keep the front end floating in the powder. both my brothers have them, on on 01 sxr 500 and other on 02 viper, with aluninum front ends and with these skis they float off trail awsome. have not had enough powder yet to test the spray but it already is much less that stock skis. added bounus is those skis are lighter than the stock ones.
 
I have a 98 700sx with a 1" Predator, 96 studs & stock skis, when I ride in any deeper stuff (like after a good fashioned snowstorm). I let out the front straps and the Adj. transfer rods almost all the way (it takes 15 to 20 mins to make all the adjustments and double check things), it floats much better that way, if you have too much front end ski pressure, by having the straps pulled up it will force the front end down into the snow. But on the trails the same setup will cause the skis to want to pick up too easily and make trail cornering scary. I want to add some aftermarket skis, but my budget is tight this year. Just my 2 cents.
 
i would think you should be able to flip your upper brackets on your front ohlins like i did on my 2001 SRX. this will get you approx .75" or you can add the extensions to the ohlins. i did that to my 98 SRX, but i flipped my brackets on the 2001 and it sits at the same height but it was free. i would highly recommend you get a set of longer shocks/limiter straps from a viper or XT for the rear. it will ride a lot better and still handle well. as for the snow coming over the hood, there's not much you can do about that other then getting a taller windshield. sometimes it is the profile of the skies that throws the snow when you're turning in the deeper stuff. :letitsnow
 
Well after finally getting some time to unload the sled I checked the sled in the garage not on the truck, the track was too tight, so I back it off a bout 3 turns both sides and then it would spin freely. Now I obviously do not have it set up perfect, I was just messing around to see things in motions etc, also to see if the wheels were wobbling or anything.

One thing I did notice and I thought this was only when I broke ( forget the name ), but the front of the skid where the front coil over shock goes on. One side 2 weeks ago sheered the bolt off, the other side held though, I fixed this, but watching it as the track went around even being off the ground it is dang close to the track ( the shock mount that is ), and before it was wearing into the track when the bolt broke. I almost think it is wearing into it more, but cannot be sure. Just seems to me it is way to close to the track, as in my perspective, if you were in the snow and the track in the center moved up as it would in the front, it would hit the lower shock mount. This thing way out of whack or something? I got a CD here I am going to look at as well, but just wanted to run the through you guys to see what you think.

As for the powder, well it got cold here now so not going to obsess over it till it warms up again lol. As it looks like I need a new track and if I do I think I am going to get a new skid off a Viper and a longer track. What do you guys think of that idea? As my track I think is probably butchered now anyway. I hate to buy a new one for a short track and since I am replacing a lot of the rear suspension, might aswell do it right.

Now does the Viper long track suspension bolt right up, or should I find a Mountian Max track off another SRX or V Max?
 
For giggles you should throw up some pics of the front. Ground level so we can see the radius rod angles and some closer of the shocks and skis. Maybe a shot of the shock tower area.
