At the risk of getting flamed for posting another possible stator problem, heres my story!
My buddy was riding my Viper, when I noticed the headlights were dim. He told me the gauges went out and it started running rough.
I know, Stator or rub through! So far, I dont see any rub throughs, but will keep searching. The sled ran fine the next day, probably only 30 miles of riding though.
Pulled my magneto and found it had a thin, but very sticky/waxy layer of grease on the inside and a little on the stator legs. Appears to have come from the recoil, because there was the same grease lying in the bottom of the recoil housing and dripping out it.
My question is, is it possible that the grease is the culprit for the stator type symtoms? really hate to buy a stator if its not bad, but we are taking it to the UP for the Give-a-way ride and will probably put 5-600 miles on.
Thanks for any insight.

I would not think this greasy residue would be the source of the electrical problesm unless it was electrically conductive. I would use a spray can of brake cleaner and clean up the flywheel and stator. Disconnect the connector where the stator wires connect to the main harness. You could use a can of elctrical contact cleaner on these connectors then replug them. It cannot harm anything to clean up the stator area, nothing to lose by cleaning it.

Hope that grease isnt oil from a leaky crank seal
Nope, its dry around and under crank shaftConcept Carbon said:Hope that grease isnt oil from a leaky crank seal

Thanks Jim, I did clean everything and now its acting up just idleing in the garage.

Im searching far a rub through wire and trying to figure out the "stator testing"
at 1800rpms Im only getting 2.5 on two white wires and around 1 on the one.But that was while the guages were on and headlight was bright. Doesnt seem like 2.5 would be enough to run everything, but Im not an electrical wizard!
I jumped the gun on my answer!! I think the seal is gone, literally!!Concept Carbon said:Hope that grease isnt oil from a leaky crank seal
Ive never had a snowmobile stator off, so when I got this one off, it looks like the rubber from the seal is totally gone!
Im assuming it should look similar to the clutch side seal, flush with the crankcase??
Can the seal be replaced with out splitting the case?
Ok, after veiwing the micro fische, it appears the seal is recessed back into the cases. Woo Hoo, its not gone
, but it is definetely leaking!!

the mag seal isn't flush w/the end of case, like the pto seal. the mag seal is about 1/2" in from the end of case.

yes the cases need to be split to replace seals
