Stator bad. Buy stock again or rebuild?

First thanks for all the great info on this site.

My '02 viper is showing all the signs of a bad stator. Dim lights (even on low beam), runs terrible if the warmers are plugged in, can't run a heated shield. Mis-firing if the warmers are turned on.

I found the info here regarding rubbed wires and testing voltages. I will check these things once its back in my garage from my buddies' house.

But I've only found posts here of people buying new or used stock stators.

So my question is, if the stock stators are known to fail, would it be better to have the stator rebuilt? Rickystator.com for example. It seems they might do a better job than stock.

Any thoughts? Any other rebuild vendors I should consider?

Sorry if this has been covered. I searched for a while without luck. Of course I often can't find things that are right in front of me.

First before we get to excited the stator needs to be throughly checked out for ohms spec,wear through on the leads AND....corossion on fly wheel and poles.

if all the above checks out after done then i would just look for a good used one,lots of time our members have them up for sale.
 
10-4. I've been burned on electrical before. Tore apart a 580 thinking it was a serious problem only to find after 3 weeks that a tap on the main relay fixed it.

So no opinion on rebuild?

Good to know. If anyone here has one for sale, email me. I should have some results by the end of the weekend.

Raining like crazy here so probably no riding for a couple weeks.
 
you'll be into a good used OEM Yamaha one cheaper.....it's up to you tho what ever you feels is the better way to go,there are company's that rebuild them yes,is time a factor or no?

Oh no. My crew is leaving (without me) on Feb 13 for Moosehead. Not good. I thought you were under like 5 feet of snow. But 50 degree rain is a killer. Hopefully some more snow will come in.

I see where you're going.

I was just looking for opinions from an experienced crowd.

I've owned probably 25 other off road machines (almost all Honda's) and never had a stator problem.

Are sleds prone to stator issues? Is it a Make, Model or Year issue?

Sorry for all the questions.

Only my second sled and 3rd non-Honda product. Didn't have much luck with the 580 EXT or jet ski either.

i think any sled is prone to some sort of problems,most times tho stator issues are caused from wire rub through/shorting because of the vibration.

usally yamaha stators are very relyable yes
 
So it's a long time since posting. Maybe this should be a new thread.

Yesterday and today, I follow the testing methods on this thread.

I have resistance of about .7 on one leg of the stator. The $20 digital craftsman multimeter reads about 5.6 M-ohms (that is M for Mega right) for the other two legs. Measured at the stator pig tail disconnected from the harness.

I then removed the plugs and cranked the motor with the stator unplugged. I got 8.5v on one leg, about 5v on another and 2.9v on the last. Measure at the reg/rect. plug (unplugged from same).

Finally, I measured the volts with it running. 9v, 5.8v, 5.4v. Instruments and headlights plugged in.

All voltages at idle with choke on. So about 2000 RPM. 37 degree F outside.

Its running rough now. And will only run without backfire with the choke on. There is no difference in performance if I unplug or plug in the instruments / headlights. I guessing timing or carb. I put new plugs in but same result.

I'm about to go after the stator. But thought I'd post to get opinions. It nice out there in central Mass but no snow.

I got this sled on a trade (insert comment here). The wire harness to the headlights has been routed under the pipe along the aluminum bolt-on support above the stator housing. The harness is open near the carb rack. I looked at the wires. They all look OK. I'll look at least one more time but the wires look good despite being exposed. As I said, the sled runs equally bad with the instruments and headlights plugged in or not plugged it.

So that is my story so far. Looking for any help as electrical problems are tough. To me it looks like the stator is junk.

Any final thoughts before I yank the stator?

I've got a two prong puller. Is that the right tool?

Seems like the Stator is right tight against the flywheel. not easy to keep the puller from hooking the stator.

I'm going to search now for a Yamaha special tool if one.

This think is pretty tight on there. Any tips?

Get an automotive damper puller. Also get three correct metric bolts that go into the stator. Only thread these in about a total of 1/2 inch.

I had a stator go bad last winter on my SRX. It checked out fine, twice at whatever the temperature was in the shop. Then....the mechanic tested it again first thing in the morning before the shop came up to the regular temp. and it tested BAD!

So what I am saying is maybe test it at room temp, and again at outdoor temp to be sure. It might sound strange, but that was the case for me. Stator was replaced and all was well. (And now I have a spare CDI box that I bought, thinking that after pulling the engine twice to test every single wire in the harness, checking for wire rub through, checking the stator twice, that it surely must by the CDI box).

Bottom line here is test your stator at room temp, and again at freezing temps.
