Just curious...Seems like a lot of '02 Vipers for sale but not many '03-'04's...Are the '04s that good???

Vipers
I believe its because the 03 and 04 were a much better riding sled and they stopped making them in 04.
My wife has an 02 and loves it. I would like to find her a nice low mileage 04.

Were there that many changes with the '03s and '04s? Also, and I guess the last of the good 2 strokes would be nice to get a hold of.

04 Viper S
Last year offered, added Ohlins on front suspension, thats the only difference as i remember. Same rear suspension as 98-2004. Different shock valving on each year.

The 2004 Viper also have a much better track. 1 1/4" rips saw. It was only the Viper S that came with the Ohlins shocks. I do not have the numbers but I am sure Yamaha sold a ton more 02's when they first came out. It was a really cool sled when it was first released. Automotive style headlights, digital dash, upgraded suspension etc.... I still think it is one of the best looking sleds ever made. After a few years the novelty of these new inovations wore off as other manufacturers followed suit. Hence the lower sales numbers in 04.

03 they went with a different seat material and higher windshield and the air induction on the 03s was black on the blue ones instead of all blue on the 02s
04 viper S like rlbock said but they also had different kyb shocks in the rear along w/red skidplate and red snowflap and ripsaw track.
and 04s offered 3 colors red/blue/black plus red/black viper S
different seat on 04s and hand/thumb warmer controls moved to the handlebar like the rx1

there are more 02s than any other year b/c the 02s sold the most. in 02 the viper was the best selling sled and most spring ordered.
03 and 04s didin't sell as well espcially since the rx1 came out in 03.
04s were the best MY vipers made, wish i could find one.
in my opinion the best were the last year viper mountain b/c it had everything the 04s had plus they ran the proactive suspension. i believe they were 05s

and the 04 had dcs. I was bummed that I got my 03 in feb of 03, and the viper s came out like 2 weeks later with everything I would have rather had.... Ohlins, ripsaw, etc.
Rear cooler
Don't forget that 04 was the only year yamaha put a rear cooler in them instead of the worthless crossover tube.

ahh yes, another reason I should have waited. if only I had known... I added the rear cooler, ripsaw, and skid plate to mine. would have been cheaper to wait a month and get the other extras as well

I've owned both and TOTALLY different ride on the S! It handles bumps better and is worth the extra $ for the upgrades, which are a great deal for an avg. of $500-900... Try em both if you want to see, if you can find an 04... Sold mine in Nov. for $3200, with extras (control rods, torque limiter, chrome w/s). I kinda miss it, but getting used to Attak.

I have 04 Viper S. First time my cousin and his friend rode it they said it was a totally different sled. Both had 02 vipers bought together with about 3000 mi on them. Probably could have made $500 on my sled that day with them bidding against each other. Lots of guys have upgraded to 4 strokes and won't sell the S.

the '04s came with the DCS...Ohlins...new seat design on them aswell...the Dash is white and the Hand/thumb controls are on the handlebars if I'm correct..way better design and the S was all out the best Viper made(if you didn't need reverse or E'start)...pretty horny colour scheme taboot...Never had the chance to ride one..thought I'd try and get mine up to that level...whats the point...4bangers are here.
I think the 02s had a slight fit and finish issue with some of the hoods and the wire harness rub through...I think they refined that by 03 or mid 03 models...

From the photo, it looks like the seat was similar to the SXR's. I thought about swapping my SXR seat for the Viper seat but my son really likes the tail light look of Viper. Either way the BOSS seat is a major upgrade for either. Al

Just a pt. of clarification for SS Vipers post, dash on the Viper S is all blk, all other things he noted are correct. I like the RX1 style handle bars and controls on it too! Seat is much nicer and reminded be of SX style I had on the 99 600 triple, my first Yamaha! DCS (detonation control) was a nice extra, with all the bad gas out there (wish I had that on the Phazer that just blew..)!

I'm pretty sure when he said dash he ment speedo gauge which is a white back ground. A lot of people like to do this to their gauge.

I got mine when Yamaha offered them for $50 which included the installation. You just had to squeel a little and your dealer would do it. Mine never really over heated by I fibbed a little.
