94 VMAX secondary

Hey all, my vmax 600 is not smoothly disengaging from high speeds to stop. I noticed a small black nylon ramp sitting beneath the secondary. the sled still moves but has a clunking sound coming down from a high speed. This does not happen at lower speeds or Rpms. I think broken piece is called a shoe ramp?. Is this the cause of my troubles and are they easy to replace or should I take it in to repair. This is about the only part of a snowmobile I lacking on knowledge about but pretty mechanically inclined.

Primary looks like it is in good condition I clean it with soap and water and blow the dust out with air on a regular basis. Belt is also in good condition.

ahhh, the 94 vmaxx is known for primary clutch failure... the rollers need to be replaced every year and right around 4000 mi, the spider has been known to break! also the slider bushing goes bad on the sec. just to name a few things.

I would think that your problem is entirely related to the slider cam that fell out, it's causing the secondary to bind and not backshift correctly. They are not hard to change and are also pretty cheap to buy.

Make sure you change all 3 buttons before you ride again. You are grinding down the ramps right now. Not to hard of a job to replace them. I did three without the tool but you need a buddy to install the snap ring while you hold it together. Make sure to mark the locations of the spring before you get it apart. Yamaha says to use a new snap ring everytime you take it apart and I agree. Had a snap ring give out once and it was not pretty!!!

Thanks for the info. I found a local person to swap them out for $20 bucks and ordered the parts online. None of the dealers around me had them in stock. I will let you know how it works after replacing the buttons.

Last year a finger from my primary was sitting inside belly pan. I found out the day before I was going up. I made a few phone calls and ended up putting on a Polaris P-85 on it from a XCR 600. It was a nice improvement.
