Well today finally got the odometer past 12,000 km's on my 2001 SX600R.The motor has never been opened up,starts great, mileage around 11mpg as of today's run.I am not able to hit 160km/hr like years back..but close to the 150km/hr today.Mind you I switched to 1.25 ripsaw track and geared down 1 tooth,so that probably lost me 5 mph or so.

SX600 are great! i have 32500 on a 97 and 18000 on new engine from 2001 and 1800km on new piston and rings. love the machine! Its all about maintenance!!!

I have a 7500 mile SX700 motor, just cracked it open for the first time 100 miles ago.

I took my Sx700 apart at 8000 miles and the cylinders still had cross hatching and the only reason I took it apart was because the recoil exploded and took out the lower end cases. I re used the pistons just put new rings in, Everything was still in spec.

Bluemonster, of course it isn't going to run 160 km/h when you added a track that slowed it down 5 mph (8km/h). Add to that a worn engine, especially rings and reeds and it all adds up.

I'm surprised to hear that 97srxXT's pistons were still in spec after 8000 miles?? That's almost 13000 km. The pistons on my 02 SRX were all under spec in under 5000 miles/8000 km. Not same motor I know, but still. How do you ride your sleds when you can ride for that long without opening it? My srx goes WOT most of the time on the river, maybe that explains why pistons don't last as long?

norweg..I think you just started a war against the sx riders,,, :o|

There were guys telling on here that had high mileage sx motors that were over that mileage and pistons were still within spec.I guess you have sh*ty oil out your way...lol...Run that SRX hard so you replace the pistons again soon will ya... ;)! especially water running I hear really wears them pistons down quicker to.... :D:DP

I must say its good to hear these Yamaha motors are built to last, I will be opening mine for the first time 11,000 mi. and are hoping the same. Definatly glad i stuck with Yamaha (just need to learn alot more)...

I had one with 9,500 miles or so on it till I lost a piston to water then lost crank 12 miles later do to my own stupidity. Did not bleed oil pump after it was out. But if i had cleaned the carbs it would not have happend.

hey sxlover. If you just opened her up..what did you discover..everything still half decent or what??

Working log can be found here http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=51725 . Cylinders were all still in spec, had them honed...had a cracked piston skirt on one piston so I replaced them all with 3 brand new OEM pistons. Ran great still when I tore it apart.
