I have a stock 99 Mountain Max that I have always ran OE Yamaha belts, Just trying to get some feedback if anyone has better luck with aftermarket belts?

I run both,, but heard a little rumour that Yamaha stock belts have a little steel belts (very little) in them.. And that is so the sheaves will wear a little and some time you have to replace them """"RUMOUR""""" !!!!!!!!!!

I have run Yamaha and Ultimax belts and couldn't really tell a difference. I think they are all pretty close, as long as your clutching is right for the belt you are using. Yamaha is probably the best for the money, IMO.

yamaha belts are made of a harder compound rubber then aftermarket belts which means that the yamaha belt will slip more but last alot longer. ive never ever busted a yamaha belt right in half or explode on me they usually just falls apart if your clutches is not lined up. the ultimax belts tend to explode.

i blew a yamaha belt today...all to hell....peices everywhere....i bought it second hand cause it looked better then my spare. it gave me alot of vibration and first trip on the lake blew all to hell...buddy i bought it off of must have knew it was a defective belt.

orchie18 the reason you felt viberation was because there was a burnt spot on the belt (my guess) i had that done a few times. it happens when the clutch slips on the belt and burns a notch. viberates alot and that would make the belt alot weaker at higher speeds

OEM for me.25,000 klm's(hard) and no noticeable clutch wear.
I hear some of the Doo belts are around $150.I would think twice about OEM at that price.

its usually really hard to see the notch in the belt when its burnt. a little notch can make alot of viberation... this is by far the worse year up here in NL for snow and ice (labrador anyway im not sure about newfoundland) we never had a good powder day yet but the forecast looks good snow for all this week. cant wait to rip up the hills

Hartman swears by Ultimax because the OEM 8DN belts slip too much, resulting in lost horsepower in his mind. Probably true to an extent. I used one for a season on the Mnt Viper and it was ok.
But those 8DN OEM belts are supposed to be good and are kind of universally liked. I use the 8DN belt now, and it seems to last longer and i like how it seems to grab tighter. Just my experience.
But I just put on a new 8DN belt on and didn't have access to facilities to clean it up/ "deglaze" it prior to install, so its squealing a little.
Oh well, the squeel will go away eventually!

Check you belt deflection with the new belt. My guesses would be that your deflection is set slightly too tight and that is where the squeel is coming from.
