Hey everyone, I just picked up a nice 1997 Yamaha SX 700 tripple for $950. I am very happy with the switch, and am excited to get the sled out for many seasons to come. It runs excellent, is reliable, looks great, powerful, and is a great deal in my eyes. I bought it with only one known problem, and was just wondering what everyone thought about it. When you PIN the throttle and the track hooks up (track is not loose), a profound vibration and noise can be heard and felt beneath you, the previous owner did tighten the drive chain, which helped for a little bit. I belive that it is in the chain case. Possibly drive chain or sprokets worn??? Is this the only thing that could cause this? If that is the case, how easy is it to replace these on my own? What is the best way for me to repair it myself? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

TJ

I cracked open the chaincase and saw that the drive chain tensioner was bottomed out, so I purchased a new chain with less slack, and both gears that are in the chain case eventhough they both looked fine. I put it all back together, put new Yamaha chain case lube in, and tightened the tensioner finger tight as I was told to by the local dealer. I took the sled for a ride and it still did the whole hopping, chattering, vibration that it did before under heavy acceleration. Could it be the drive cog shaft thing that turns the track? The track is a nearly brand new Camoplast Ripsaw 1 1/4", so I know that it isn't the lugs on the track, cuz they're not worn at all. Any other ideas? Appreciate the help again,

TJ

Yes it could be the driveshaft, bearings on the drive axle, or bearings on the jackshaft.

You mentioned, it has a 1.25 ripsaw track, does it also have front heat exchanger protectors? If so the track will rub the protectors if not notched. I would look into the protectors, rubbing, and also look at the drive axel brg, this is located directely under the secondary clutch. Al

Maybe you track is racheting...does your drive shaft only have the two drive sprockets in the middle or does it have four??
If i remember right when i owned my 97 SX 700 i added the outside sprockets to stop it from racheting and worked well.

Sounds to me like bad jackshaft bearings causing slop possibly, or worn out drivers? Maybe drive lugs on the track?

Just throwing it out there.

Thankyou, Im going to tighten the track this week probably, because it looks a little loose. I don't know why the track would rub only under heavy acceleration, but it could be it. If not, ill move on to the next option. Thanks for the help!

Mine had similar issues, it felt like the sprockets were spinning in the track ...so I tightened the track, it helped but didn't solve the issue. I few weeks later I ended up taking the skid out with the drive axle and track and found that the drive axle was spinning in the sprocket wheels. The only way I was able to spot it was because the drive shaft had only spun half way around the last time it happened and the shaft being hex shaped I could see it had spun.

That sounds like it would be it, probably is worn drivers, are there stronger drivers that can be put on the drive shaft, that won't strip and spin around the axle? How much money would this be to replace you think?

Thanks,

TJ

I think they all go on the same way (press fit). they do make drivers that won't ratchet but that is just concerning the outside of the wheel, not ones that are spinning on the shaft. I think if you just had new ones with zero mile on them it would solve the issue .... provided this is the issue. Not sure if you could pin them some how or if it would weaken the shaft to much. also make sure the shaft has no wear or you'll be doing it again ..Changing the drive sprockets is the easy part pulling the skid is the PITA.

Here is a link to a Canadian site that has them
