Belt Squeal But no Washer on Secondary...

Ever since Yamaha widen their 8DN belt (apparently2-3 years ago) I have belt squeal. At fist when the belt is new it will squeal at idle. After some km on the belt it will rarely squeal at idle. But after a days ride it comes back I'm guessing when the clutch face plate is hot. As soon I let go of the gas going down hill or at a stop I hear some sort of squeal.

I measured my belt at 2mm high on the secondary. Manual says -0.5mm to 1.5mm. So I removed my secondary yesterday as per Daman instructions. Was looking to remove 3 washer from the bolts to get my belt a tad lower on the secondary. To my surprise I already have no washer between the bolts!? Is 2mm belt high way to much?

Re-installed secondary as is and before I put my belt back on I noticed some things. I can move my secondary on the shaft back and forth. Also I only have one #24 washer. I can move it with my fingers. At first I though I didn't tight the #27 bolt properly but no its in good.

Also is #16 supposed to come out when I removed the #27 bolt? I only had #25,#24,#26 when I removed the bolt. Didn't even notice #16.

Searching in my service manual I found that secondary freeplay is normal? But only for 1-2mm. From memory I have way more then that. Could it be the cause of my squealing when clutch is hot? From what I see I need to add some more washers/shims #3 in this pic (#24 in previous post pic).

I would check your clutch alignment in particular your centre to centre distance. If the centre to centre distance is too far it will cause the belt to squeel.

If the centre to centre distance checks then it could be you need to replace the adjuster bolts, they may be worn at the tips.

I have never had to do this but... you could install longer adjuster bolts and install a "jam" nut on them to allow more sheave spacing adjustment.

Some people leave the secondary clutch to "float" on the jackshaft, the idea being that the clutch will self align to the primary clutch during use.

yes you need more washers,maybe a member will send you some,i had to do that on mt XTC when i first got it,get enough washers to get your 1-2mm and your good. I like it floating

like bob said check C/C that may be off is why your squealing.
 
The screws that you checked for washers, gets worn and therefor the sheaves get closer together. If you look at the screws there should be an un-threaded area on the end of the screw. If you have threads all the way it means that your screws are worn.

There is a plate inside the clutch that the three screws hits when the clutch sheaves are together. There can also be grooves in this plate from the screws hitting it. If there are grooves in it you can just remove the three screws that holds the plate and then just turn the plate around and use the other side. Basically a free fix.
Caution, the screws that hold the plate normally has loctite on them so make sure to use the right screwdriver when you remove them. I prefer a "hammer" screwdriver, I dunno the english word for it, the ones you hit with the hammer and then the screw-driver-bit in the end of it rotates.

My bet is that your screws are very worn. If your plate isnt worn and you get new screws then you will probably have to put washers on the screws.

Like sideshowbob sais, check your center to center distance too.
 
I agree with kimoaj, those bolts wear over time and need to be replaced. Easy to check, take your old ones with you and go to Yammie shop and compare them to some new ones.
 
when it's on the stand now, the track creeps forward - no washers and new belt. before the bolts, it was spinning much faster at idle. Measurement between the sheaves is now what the book says it should be.
 
Thanks for all the info guys! I'll get new screws for the squeal and new spacers for the floating. Right now I have at least half an inch of float!

If squeal is still present I'll have to bring it to a mechanic to check the center to center cause I don't have the tool or the experience for this.

I'll keep you posted.
