Well since I won't get up north until our guys trip, I want to run the ol' Ovation. I had issues getting it to idle and "messed" with adjusting the idle screw and the throttle cable tension to try to get it to idle. It would fire up, rev real high, I'd get it worked back down to what sounded like a reasonable idle, blip the throttle and it it would either die or take off again.
I basically packed it back into the trailer to deal with another day. The "another" day is coming. I plan to go back through and reclean the carbs but I know I messed up the setting on the idle screw adjustment and the throttle cable. Does anyone have a baseline for me?
Also if someone has the carb jetting sheet laying around for it, that would be awesome. It's an 89 Ovation with the 340 fan. Single carb, 2-barrel style. I have the service manual but can't find the jetting/adjustment chart.

the stock jetting should be in the tec pages as they made it untill 1992 i think.

I guess I needed to re-read my tech manual a little better. It is in there. If it's anything like my snowblower as of late, I'll get it to run...for about a minute then I'll spend weeks punching myself in my face.

main is supposed to be 174 and the pilot is supposed to be 76 acording to the tec pages. fuel screw is 1-1/2 turns out and the air is 0.8. idle is supposed to be 1800rpms +/-100.
i think there is a jetting chart for elevation in the sled tec pages somewhere. that is where i got the specs i put up for you.

I noticed that there is a difference between the owner's manual on carb setting and the tech manual. Which one should I go by? It's not much. Owners manual says 1.5 turns the tech manual says 1.75.

start with 1-1/2. it might need the 1.75 but only testing will reveal that.

Sorry to bring back an older thread, but I am having a hard time with an 89 Ovation that has a 99 Ovation engine in it.
I dont know if the carb and engine have been mismatched, but the manual for the 89 says the main jets should be 128\132 and the ones in the carb are 174.
This sled boggs down at about half throttle and wont go any faster that 45 km\h so Im wondering if the smaller jets could be the solution.
Other thing that worries me is the Carb switch wire (electrical wire that sits under the throttle assembly in the carb) has been cut....could this be a problem>?

are the wires joined together? that is the tor and it sounds like it is bypassed.
check your elevation as the carb might be from a different elevation. jet it for your elevation. sounds too ritch though.

you need to verify the stamping on the carb the 89 is the only year that carb was used and the mains where 132 in 90 and up they used a different carb almost identical but little diferences inside for the reasons of the 176 mains also take the carb off and look at the intake side if it where the needles protrude through with them lightly seated you should see just the tips of the needle sticking out if you can see the flat base of the needle the casting has broke and the carb is junk and you will have a hard time getting it to idle right or have any throttle response and it will want to die once the idle falls

Throw that funky "Teikei" carburettor in the trash can and put in an ordinary Mikuni VM-32 or VM-34 instead.

You must start with putting that airbox back on.Yamahakid1995 said:I cant seem to find the correct jets for it.

If the engine still wants to die after it is warm you definitly running lean.
( maybee you have a blocked pilot jet due to bad/dirty fuel )
You must adjust the carb to give more fuel down low in the rev range.

Sounds like a clogged pilot jet to me. I'd clean the carb before doing anything else. you already have the airbox off so getting the carb out would be simple.

What other models with 340 would have those carbs on?
I figure I would also need the correct intake manifold.....
limige said:Lasse, how you gonna drop a Mikuni VM-32/34 on there,
when the gaskets are setup for a large oval ?

You can take a used Mikuni VM-32 or VM-34 carb from an Ski-Doo / Polaris / Arctic Cat / John Deere....
Preferably you choose a carb from a model with single mounted carb from a similar 340~370 cc engine.
Just use the intake manifold ( 2 ) from an scrapped Yamaha ET-340 engine.
+ a carburetor flange ( 10 ) made to Mikuni VM-32/34 dimensions ( Kimpex part # 07-100-13 ).
+ a throttle cable ( Kimpex part # 05-138 ).
Also look at this link for more Mikuni-VM knowledge : http://www.sudco.com/Carburetor01.html

Thank You very much!
If you want, I can take some pictures of the Mikuni-VM instalation in the Ovation.3wheelerdude said:Thank You very much!
Just let me know.
I have had the Mikuni carb on my daughters Ovation the last 3 seasons and
the engine running strong like a champ.
