88 Exciter flooded again...ghost ride it off a cliff?

Just kidding!... Seriously though, this sucker runs like a bat-outta-hell and then 50% of the time fills the crankcase with fuel during the night. No big deal, I pull plugs...set it on it's side and pull roughly 1 million times which purges a LOT of fuel...then put the plugs back in and VROOM. Sometimes it doesn't have the problem and it starts just fine...I'm tired of the mess...and my arm is wimpy.

The needle and seats look fine...the tank is vented...would a crappy diaphragm in the fuel filter have these inconsistent symptoms?

I'm thinking of getting new needle and seats for both carbs, inspecting and cleaning the choke plungers-cables-springs, possibly a fuel pump diaphragm, and...uh...any other suggestions?

When does it flood the most? when the tank is full, or it doesn't matter? Your floats may be set to high, how many miles on the sled, if there's quite a few(miles) it may be a possibility as you stated that the needle and seats need replaced. Good Luck
 
I think it is your fuel pump diaphragm. My Exciter does the same thing. God help you if you forget to shut the fuel off and let it sit a few days. Pull plugs. PULL PULL PULL. My machine is not quite as bad as you are describing. Really bad if the tank is full.

It doesn't matter how much fuel is in it, and it's got 10,000+ miles on it (speedo cable end finally wore away 2 years ago @ 8970. I've been meaning to fix it but,...you know how it goes...). I always try to remember the shut off but sometimes forget, or it gets knocked by something. I don't remember there being a setting for the floats...I just put it in the garage for a tear down so I'll be double checking. I thought maybe the tank wasn't venting and building pressure which might push fuel past the needle/seat, but would the fuel pump allow that? It seems that the diaphragm must be bad? I'm just not sure so I'm left with the whole "buy everything-replace everything" solution...

I just hate it when my sleds are smarter than me...

Any other thoughts?

LOL...yes, God has a sense of humor it seems...

I pull plugs and roll it on its left side and WOW. It's impressive how much fuel comes out...or pours out rather when I'm pulling. Such a mess. It's like it has a
bulimic eating disorder...binge and purge...!

Fires up on the first pull afterward though...
 
I'm with jwurl, rather then sinking money into the sled, just use the fuel shut off valve that is to the lower-right of your steering column, every time you are done riding for any extended period of time. This stops the flow of gas from the tank to the carbs. It only takes a second and should do the trick.

x2 When the float is all the way up no fuel can get through, the other day I had the carbs off my 95 vmax600 I blew through the fuel line tube and slowly raised the float by hand and by the time the float was almost all the way up i couldnt blow through it anymore.
 
this drove me nuts for a year on my sons bike, i put in new needles and seats and same problem sometimes flooding sometimes not well after cursing ect.ect. bikes float bowl had a little dimple where the needle hit float bowl sometimes it would catch on the ridge and sometimes it wouldn't. i ended up leveling dimple off with jb weld and it shuts floats off always now that metal was soft must have been soft or something because i have never seen a needle do that to a bottom of a float arm. check that while you have your carbs off while cleaning them its always something stupid like that.
