Last ride everything was good. I went for a ride the other day and it was cold in the morning. Even had a hard time starting. Warmed up the sled good and went to spin the track on the jack stand and now the speedo does not work. Any ideas where to start. Has anyone had this happen to them?

check under your secondary where the gear is located. you might have to undo the speedo cable and spin it to make sure it's not the cable that is broken. if it works then you will need to undo the 3 -12mm bolts that hold the gear drive which is also the bearing retainer on the end of the front driveshaft. when you remove it there will be a square key tha goes into the end of the driveshaft that spins the gear drive. the key might be broken or it might be the gear drive. if the key is good then you will have to insert it into the gear drive and with the cable attahed you should be able to see if it moves the speedo.

while your at it and since you have all that removed i would take the seal off the front bearing and add some grease to it. ;)!

You need to be careful, usually when the speedo stops working (about 80% of the time) it means that the drive gear (bearing) could be ready to pack it in while you're enjoying a ride. If sgauthier is correct then it's not a bad fix - but you may need to do more than just grease the gear...

i really didn't tell him to open up the speedo gear box but rather to grease the bearing on the driveshaft since he will have it apart to look at the square key that turns the gear box. 9 times out of 10 it's the square key that has snapped in half and if it did you might have a heck of a time removing the half that is in the end of the drive shaft.

let us know how you make out. ;)!

I had the same issue for a couple of seasons. The spedo drive key would always break in cold temps. I replaced the complete drive gear and it would still shear the drive key. I believe snow dust would get in the drive gear assembly and freeeze up after it sat for a while. I greased the heck out of the whole assembly before bolting it on and the problem went away for good !!!

Have fun getting the sheared off drive key, they can be a bear.

mine just snapped too....it is the second time in about 600 miles. I am leaning toward the bearing being shot. Going to take it all apart and replace the bearings!!!! This summer all of the drive bearings are coming off and getting replaced with new ones. Where is the best place to get them?

I know of three this year, including me. I had checked it at the beginning of the year, looked ok, so I left it. About a hundred or so miles later, my speedo dies. I'm thinking I just broke the link. Pulled the cover and the bearing was in pieces. I got lucky, no other damage. Those bearings take alot of abuse. I would pay special attention to that bearing. Their really not that hard to replace, but when they go south and you have to do it, it's no fun. Soc

Don't forget too fill the spedo drive gear full before bolting it on.

I have over 10,000 miles on my old SRX and that is what fixed my problem, even after new bearings it would still shear the drive key. With that many mile you can imagine I have replaced them a few times.........
