97 Vmax 500 Twin using lots of gas then blew

Check your clutching. Today, actually went for a ride on my 97 twin 600 vmax. Last ride my buddy used it and was using lot's of gas and oil and started loosing some rpms. I pulled the carbs, cleaned and checked the jetting. Went for a ride today and same thing. When I stopped the engine jerked and shut off, could not pull it over, felt like a seized piston for sure. When I was taking the belt off the clutch for the tow home I found that one of the weights was stuck to the roller. Further inspection I realized most of the rollers and bushing were all bad. I just rebuilt top and bottom last year. I think I finally found why I blew the engine the first time. If you do not have the right drag, the engine was over working. All the signs of a piston going including leaned out spark plugs. Just something to keep in mind. Thank god I caught this in time before a second re-build.

Help yourselves and get a good quality compression guage, I have a 1997 XTC 600 thats been used up, But I caught it before it blew up with the help of Pat Hauke, I told him my Comp # whitch was 85 to 90 @ best, He said rebuild it now before it detinates itself ( Any loss of comp can warn U of upcoming disaster) I had hauke check everything and ok it before I redid mine and it simply (IS) better than new go Pat !

I actually just finished rebuilding the clutches with new weights and rollers so I think those should be ok.

This 500 was reading 120 and 120 psi at the start of the season. Now 120 and 0 lol.
